Work, business and financial ethics · high-risk qualified-review course

Riba is not a marginal technical concern. The Qur’an distinguishes permitted trade from forbidden riba, commands believers to leave outstanding riba, preserves the lender’s principal and forbids both doing wrong and being wronged. This course begins with those texts, then introduces authenticated exchange reports and later juristic categories without pretending that a web page can classify a mortgage, bank account, credit card, pension, bond, buy-now-pay-later plan, business facility or digital product.

Meaning in translation

Saheeh International is the primary reading. The two named comparisons make translation choices visible; none is presented as the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Primary · Saheeh International

Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, "Trade is [just] like interest." But Allāh has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allāh. But whoever returns [to dealing in interest or usury] – those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.

Compare · M. Pickthall

Those who swallow usury cannot rise up save as he ariseth whom the devil hath prostrated by (his) touch. That is because they say: Trade is just like usury; whereas Allah permitteth trading and forbiddeth usury. He unto whom an admonition from his Lord cometh, and (he) refraineth (in obedience thereto), he shall keep (the profits of) that which is past, and his affair (henceforth) is with Allah. As for him who returneth (to usury) – Such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

Those who devour usury will not stand except as stand one whom the Evil one by his touch Hath driven to madness. That is because they say: "Trade is like usury," but Allah hath permitted trade and forbidden usury. Those who after receiving direction from their Lord, desist, shall be pardoned for the past; their case is for Allah (to judge); but those who repeat (The offence) are companions of the Fire: They will abide therein (for ever).

Inspect Qur’an 2:281 and the named translations on Quran.com

The safest starting point is the Qur’an’s own sequence. The passage describes people who treated trade and riba as equivalent, rejects that equivalence, calls for repentance, preserves principal, protects against reciprocal injustice, gives respite to a debtor in hardship and closes with accountability. No single English word captures every historical and juristic use of riba, so the Arabic term, translation choices and context remain visible.

Qur’an 2:275 explicitly rejects the claim that trade is merely the same as riba and states that trade is permitted while riba is forbidden. Identify the actual relationship and economic substance before comparing any return. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.

Read the complete evidence panel before reducing it to a step. The Arabic, named translation, source locator and explanation have different roles; preserving those roles lets a learner worship with confidence without turning a short guide into an unsupported ruling.

Keep three lines in your notes: what the source explicitly says, what this lesson explains, and what remains for qualified review. That structure makes later correction clear rather than embarrassing.

The verse does not say that every arrangement called a sale is valid or classify a modern product from its marketing label.

Reading support

A learner-facing transliteration is deliberately withheld until the complete Arabic wording has passed assigned language review. Learn the supplication from a capable teacher rather than guessing from English letters.

Meaning in English

This is a source-bound editorial paraphrase for understanding. It is not the Arabic report and is not presented as a verbatim translation.

Editorial paraphrase

Ubadah ibn al-Samit reported that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) forbade exchanging gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates and salt for salt except equally and on the spot, and stated that giving or taking an addition is riba.

Evidence use

The report supplies authenticated exchange rules for the six named commodities and is a principal evidence used by jurists when explaining riba al-fadl and deferred exchange.

Riba al-fadl and riba an-nasi’ah are later juristic labels used to organise revealed evidence; they are not phrases displayed in the Qur’anic riba passage. The first commonly addresses prohibited excess in specified exchanges, while the second addresses prohibited deferment or increase connected with time. Their precise definitions, causes and extension beyond the named commodities require qualified study across recognised fiqh methods.

Jurists use riba al-fadl to describe the prohibited excess evidenced when specified ribawi items of the same kind are exchanged unequally. Record kind, quantity, quality, possession and any additional benefit before seeking classification. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.

A beginner needs a usable route and an honest boundary at the same time. Learn the shared practice first, record any circumstance that changes it, and take medical, financial, disability or school-specific questions to a qualified person who can examine the real case.

Read once for meaning and a second time for boundaries. On the second reading, test strong words such as always, never, invalid and required against the complete evidence shown.

Schools and specialists analyse the effective cause and scope; a learner must not extend the category to every unequal barter without qualified study.

Learning move: Open lesson 2, complete its practice move and save any referral question.

Meaning in translation

Saheeh International is the primary reading. The two named comparisons make translation choices visible; none is presented as the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Primary · Saheeh International

O you who have believed, when you contract a debt for a specified term, write it down. And let a scribe write [it] between you in justice. Let no scribe refuse to write as Allāh has taught him. So let him write and let the one who has the obligation [i.e., the debtor] dictate. And let him fear Allāh, his Lord, and not leave anything out of it. But if the one who has the obligation is of limited understanding or weak or unable to dictate himself, then let his guardian dictate in justice. And bring to witness two witnesses from among your men. And if there are not two men [available], then a man and two women from those whom you accept as witnesses – so that if one of them [i.e., the women] errs, then the other can remind her. And let not the witnesses refuse when they are called upon. And do not be [too] weary to write it, whether it is small or large, for its [specified] term. That is more just in the sight of Allāh and stronger as evidence and more likely to prevent doubt between you, except when it is an immediate transaction which you conduct among yourselves. For [then] there is no blame upon you if you do not write it. And take witnesses when you conclude a contract. Let no scribe be harmed or any witness. For if you do so, indeed, it is [grave] disobedience in you. And fear Allāh. And Allāh teaches you. And Allāh is Knowing of all things.

Compare · M. Pickthall

O ye who believe! When ye contract a debt for a fixed term, record it in writing. Let a scribe record it in writing between you in (terms of) equity. No scribe should refuse to write as Allah hath taught him, so let him write, and let him who incurreth the debt dictate, and let him observe his duty to Allah his Lord, and diminish naught thereof. But if he who oweth the debt is of low understanding, or weak, or unable himself to dictate, then let the guardian of his interests dictate in (terms of) equity. And call to witness, from among your men, two witnesses. And if two men be not (at hand) then a man and two women, of such as ye approve as witnesses, so that if the one erreth (through forgetfulness) the other will remember. And the witnesses must not refuse when they are summoned. Be not averse to writing down (the contract) whether it be small or great, with (record of) the term thereof. That is more equitable in the sight of Allah and more sure for testimony, and the best way of avoiding doubt between you; save only in the case when it is actual merchandise which ye transfer among yourselves from hand to hand. In that case it is no sin for you if ye write it not. And have witnesses when ye sell one to another, and let no harm be done to scribe or witness. If ye do (harm to them) lo! it is a sin in you. Observe your duty to Allah. Allah is teaching you. And Allah is knower of all things.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

O ye who believe! When ye deal with each other, in transactions involving future obligations in a fixed period of time, reduce them to writing Let a scribe write down faithfully as between the parties: let not the scribe refuse to write: as Allah Has taught him, so let him write. Let him who incurs the liability dictate, but let him fear His Lord Allah, and not diminish aught of what he owes. If they party liable is mentally deficient, or weak, or unable Himself to dictate, Let his guardian dictate faithfully, and get two witnesses, out of your own men, and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, such as ye choose, for witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her. The witnesses should not refuse when they are called on (For evidence). Disdain not to reduce to writing (your contract) for a future period, whether it be small or big: it is juster in the sight of Allah, More suitable as evidence, and more convenient to prevent doubts among yourselves but if it be a transaction which ye carry out on the spot among yourselves, there is no blame on you if ye reduce it not to writing. But take witness whenever ye make a commercial contract; and let neither scribe nor witness suffer harm. If ye do (such harm), it would be wickedness in you. So fear Allah; For it is Good that teaches you. And Allah is well acquainted with all things. If ye are on a journey, and cannot find a scribe, a pledge with possession (may serve the purpose). And if one of you deposits a thing on trust with another, let the trustee (faithfully) discharge his trust, and let him Fear his Lord conceal not evidence; for whoever conceals it, – his heart is tainted with sin. And Allah knoweth all that ye do.

Meaning in English

This is a source-bound editorial paraphrase for understanding. It is not the Arabic report and is not presented as a verbatim translation.

Editorial paraphrase

Jabir reported that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) pronounced a curse upon the receiver of riba, its payer, its recorder and its two witnesses, and said that they are alike.

Evidence use

The report communicates the gravity of knowingly participating in a riba transaction across several roles.

Debt can meet a real need, but it can also expose a vulnerable person to pressure. The Qur’an preserves principal, rejects injustice, commands written records for deferred debt and requires respite for genuine hardship. Authenticated Sunnah communicates the gravity of participation in riba. Contemporary institutions apply these sources to stipulated increases and rescheduling, but an individual case still needs its complete agreement and circumstances.

Qur’an 2:281 recalls the return to اللّٰه (ALLAH) and complete repayment for every soul; Qur’an 2:282 then gives detailed attention to writing deferred debt, fair dictation, witnesses and preserving evidence. Let accountability support accurate records of parties, principal, due dates, currency, security, authorised changes and communication access in language the parties can understand. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.

Calm completeness is the goal. Repeating an action without evidence, rushing past a required distinction, or ignoring real harm can all move the learner away from careful worship. Work through the evidence once slowly, check once, and improve through reviewed teaching.

An adult guiding a child should praise careful attention and an honest “I need to ask” answer. The aim is worship with understanding, not performance for the teacher.

These ayat are not reproduced as a complete modern evidence code; accessibility, consumer, data and court requirements vary.

Modern products combine contracts, regulation, technology and marketing. Two products with the same label may create different ownership, guarantees, fees and risks; two products with different labels may produce similar economic effects. This lesson teaches a repeatable review method for accounts, finance, cards, investments and digital products while refusing to provide a named ruling or recommendation.

Qur’an 4:29 contrasts wrongful consumption with trade by mutual consent. Check whether risks, recurring costs, limitations, conflicts and cancellation consequences were understandable before agreement. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.

For a younger learner, use plain words, a visual sequence without animate imagery and one correction at a time. Adults should protect privacy, explain unfamiliar terms and never use religious teaching to shame a child.

If terminology becomes difficult, return to the practical question: what is the learner preparing to do, which step is established here, and what fact about the person or situation could change the answer?

A signature may not settle misrepresentation, vulnerability, capacity, unfair terms or regulatory duties.

Learning move: Open lesson 4, complete its practice move and save any referral question.

Keep revelation, demonstration and legal classification distinct

Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."

Compare · M. Pickthall

Allah tasketh not a soul beyond its scope. For it (is only) that which it hath earned, and against it (only) that which it hath deserved. Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget, or miss the mark! Our Lord! Lay not on us such a burden as thou didst lay on those before us! Our Lord! Impose not on us that which we have not the strength to bear! Pardon us, absolve us and have mercy on us, Thou, our Protector, and give us victory over the disbelieving folk.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

On no soul doth Allah Place a burden greater than it can bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that it earns. (Pray:) "Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; our Lord! Lay not on us a burden Like that which Thou didst lay on those before us; Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins, and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector; Help us against those who stand against faith."

Read Qur’an 2:275–281 as a connected passage, then compare 3:130, 4:161 and 30:39 without isolating one phrase from the fuller prohibition. Study Sahih Muslim 1587a and 1598 with their exact scope. Attribute contemporary conclusions to the International Islamic Fiqh Academy rather than presenting them as revelation. For a real case, map principal, ownership, sale or loan, promised return, fees, delay, security, compulsion, hardship and governing law.

The course begins with the Qur’anic command, uses authenticated Prophetic teaching where relevant and labels later legal classifications. This gives a learner a usable route without pretending that a short page decides every recognised difference or personal case.

Distinguish a revealed command, an authenticated Prophetic demonstration and a later legal classification. They work together, but they are not interchangeable. Where recognised schools differ, this resource labels the difference instead of presenting one view as the only Islam.

A resume point can preserve more than scroll position. Save the last completed step, the unresolved question and the next safe action so the learner can continue without unnecessary repetition.

This is general education, not a personal fatwa, halal certification, banking or insurance recommendation, investment advice, debt instruction, tax opinion, contract review or legal answer. Never cancel cover, stop payment, conceal facts, ignore compulsory law or breach an agreement from this page. A named product, policy, account, transaction, dispute or necessity claim requires complete current documents and appropriately qualified commercial-fiqh, regulated-finance, accounting, safeguarding and governing-law review before indexing.

Learning move: Make three columns headed revelation, authenticated demonstration and qualified application.

Finish with a calm, usable learning record

Meaning in translation

Saheeh International is the primary reading. The two named comparisons make translation choices visible; none is presented as the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Primary · Saheeh International

A human-reviewed full transliteration is being prepared. Listen to the complete ayah and use the Arabic with a capable teacher rather than relying on an unreviewed technical conversion.

Transliteration can help you begin, but it cannot reproduce every Arabic sound or replace listening, tajwid study, or correction from a capable teacher.

Primary · Saheeh International

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart – about all those [one] will be questioned.

Compare · M. Pickthall

(O man), follow not that whereof thou hast no knowledge. Lo! the hearing and the sight and the heart – of each of these it will be asked.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

And pursue not that of which thou hast no knowledge; for every act of hearing, or of seeing or of (feeling in) the heart will be enquired into (on the Day of Reckoning).

Start with the complete documents rather than the product name. Draw every cash flow, identify what each payment is for, record what is guaranteed and who bears genuine loss. Separate a loan from a sale, lease, agency or partnership. Mark assumptions and unresolved questions. Do not alter an agreement until independent qualified reviewers have examined the facts, safe alternatives, dependencies and legal consequences.

Record what has been learned, practised and checked. Do not turn uncertainty into repeated worship, abandoned obligations or authority over another learner. The next action should be specific and proportionate.

Save the exact point that needs review. A useful learning record says what was completed, what remains uncertain, which source was checked and who should help next. That is more valuable than a confident tick beside a misunderstood step.

Explain the practice in plain language before using legal vocabulary. If the simple sentence overstates the evidence, a technical Arabic label will not repair it.

Learning move: Save the completed steps, one unresolved question and the support route required next.

Qur’an evidence
Qur'an-primary; controlled Quran Foundation QPC Hafs panels. Named translations are human renderings and later explanation remains separately attributed. Arabic, word alignment, transliteration and named translations are supplied through the separately labelled Quran Foundation panels.
Hadith evidence
Controlled authenticated record: muslim:1587a, muslim:1598. Report wording, grading and personal application remain distinct. The collection and reference are preserved; a named displayed grading is not silently changed into a universal claim.
Teaching explanation
Explanatory prose, examples, diagrams and adult teaching advice are Tawheed Club editorial material. They are never presented as Qur’an, translation, tafsir or words of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him).
Release control
This item must pass source, meaning, language, editorial and release checks. Corrections remain welcome when supported by an exact source locator.

Help a learner master Riba: Foundations and Common Questions

Riba is not a marginal technical concern. The Qur’an distinguishes permitted trade from forbidden riba, commands believers to leave outstanding riba, preserves the lender’s principal and forbids both doing wrong and being wronged. This course begins with those texts, then introduces authenticated exchange reports and later juristic categories without pretending that a web page can classify a mortgage, bank account, credit card, pension, bond, buy-now-pay-later plan, business facility or digital product. Your role is to slow the learning down, keep the exact evidence visible and make it safe for the learner to say, “I am not sure yet.”

Begin with the source

Open the named ayah or hadith before explaining it. Tell the learner whether they are seeing Arabic revelation, a reading aid, a named translation, a hadith translation or editorial teaching.

Invite an answer before helping

Ask one precise question and wait. If the learner struggles, point to the relevant line, narrow the choice or replay the audio before supplying the answer.

Correct with dignity

Praise honest checking and careful effort. Correct the idea or sound without labelling the learner, and never turn a mistake into embarrassment.

01Prepare a focused session
  1. Read Riba: Foundations and Common Questions yourself and open every cited source before inviting the learner.
  2. Choose one realistic aim from the mastery statement. Do not try to teach the whole page in one sitting.
  3. Test any Arabic audio. If a sound is outside your confidence, plan to listen together and seek correction from a capable teacher.
  4. Remove distractions and decide when to stop: about 8–10 minutes for a younger child, 15–20 minutes for ages 8–11, or 20–30 minutes for an older learner.
  5. Keep paper optional. If Qur’anic text is printed, follow the respect and waste guidance shown above the ayah panel.

Opening words: “We are going to learn one idea carefully and see exactly where it comes from. We can pause, replay and check the source whenever we need to.”

02Use a source-led teaching conversation
  1. Connect: Ask what the learner already thinks the title means. Record the answer without immediately judging it.
  2. Read or listen: Open the first evidence panel or cited report. Hear the complete Arabic before isolating one word or phrase.
  3. Notice: Ask the learner to identify the exact words that support the first teaching point. A contextual word gloss is a clue; the complete named translation supplies the sentence meaning.
  4. Explain: Read the teaching paragraph. Ask, “Which part came directly from the source, and which part is the writer helping us understand?”
  5. Apply: Choose one practice task. Keep everyday examples within the boundary of the source; do not invent promises, hidden causes or rulings.
  6. Retrieve: Close the explanation and ask the learner to state the idea, evidence locator and one careful application in their own words.
03Questions for this exact resource
  • “What does What the Qur’an Says about Riba mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 2:275)?”
  • “What does Riba al-Fadl and Riba an-Nasi’ah mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 2:276)?”
  • “Which sentence is revelation or hadith, and which sentence is explanation?”
  • “What would be an overstatement that the cited source does not allow us to make?”
04Adapt the same truth for different ages

Ages 5–7

Teach one short source phrase and one meaning. Use text cards, colour bands, paths or simple geometric symbols—never a picture of اللّٰه (ALLAH) and never an image that implies His form. Let the child point, match, listen and repeat once or twice.

Ages 8–11

Use two or three evidence cards and ask the learner to match each idea to its locator. Invite a short explanation in their own words, then reopen the source to correct it together.

Ages 12–15

Compare the named English translations where provided. Ask what wording differs, what remains constant, and why a translation must not be called the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Ages 16+ and adults

Require a precise claim, an exact source locator and a stated boundary. Invite the learner to distinguish established meaning from inference and to mark any unresolved question for qualified review.

05Support Arabic without creating false confidence
  1. Listen to the whole ayah or supplication first.
  2. Follow the Arabic from right to left and use the word-level controls only after hearing the complete wording.
  3. Treat transliteration as temporary scaffolding. It cannot reproduce every Arabic sound.
  4. Let the learner echo a short unit, then return it to the full phrase so meaning and pronunciation remain connected.
  5. If neither of you can hear or form a sound confidently, record it for a capable Qur’an or Arabic teacher. Do not manufacture an English substitute and call it exact.

Gentle correction: “Let us listen once more and notice where the sound begins,” protects both accuracy and confidence.

06Choose one useful follow-up
  • Study every controlled evidence panel in context.
  • Complete the learning move and resume from the saved position.

Complete one task independently before adding another. Adult support should reveal the route, not hide whether the learner can use it.

07Revisit for durable mastery

After 24 hours · five minutes

  1. Ask for the central idea without showing the answer.
  2. Ask the learner to find its source locator.
  3. Replay one Arabic phrase and reconnect it to the complete meaning.
  4. Correct by reopening the source, then end with one successful retrieval.

After seven days · eight minutes

  1. Ask for the idea, source and boundary in the learner’s own words.
  2. Retry the most difficult mastery question.
  3. Apply the idea to one new but appropriate situation.
  4. Record what is secure and what needs another supported attempt.
