Riba: Foundations and Common Questions · lesson 2

Riba al-fadl and riba an-nasi’ah are later juristic labels used to organise revealed evidence; they are not phrases displayed in the Qur’anic riba passage. The first commonly addresses prohibited excess in specified exchanges, while the second addresses prohibited deferment or increase connected with time. Their precise definitions, causes and extension beyond the named commodities require qualified study across recognised fiqh methods.

Meaning in English

This is a source-bound editorial paraphrase for understanding. It is not the Arabic report and is not presented as a verbatim translation.

Editorial paraphrase

Ubadah ibn al-Samit reported that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) forbade exchanging gold for gold, silver for silver, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, dates for dates and salt for salt except equally and on the spot, and stated that giving or taking an addition is riba.

Evidence use

The report supplies authenticated exchange rules for the six named commodities and is a principal evidence used by jurists when explaining riba al-fadl and deferred exchange.

Inspect Sahih Muslim 1587a at the named source

Sahih Muslim 1587a names gold, silver, wheat, barley, dates and salt and requires equality and on-the-spot exchange when each named item is exchanged for the same kind. Keep the six named items and the report’s wording visible before introducing juristic extensions. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.

Read the complete evidence panel before reducing it to a step. The Arabic, named translation, source locator and explanation have different roles; preserving those roles lets a learner worship with confidence without turning a short guide into an unsupported ruling.

Keep three lines in your notes: what the source explicitly says, what this lesson explains, and what remains for qualified review. That structure makes later correction clear rather than embarrassing.

The report does not itself name banknotes, electronic money, cryptoassets, jewellery, commodity platforms or modern settlement systems. This is general education, not a personal fatwa, halal certification, banking or insurance recommendation, investment advice, debt instruction, tax opinion, contract review or legal answer. Never cancel cover, stop payment, conceal facts, ignore compulsory law or breach an agreement from this page. A named product, policy, account, transaction, dispute or necessity claim requires complete current documents and appropriately qualified commercial-fiqh, regulated-finance, accounting, safeguarding and governing-law review before indexing.

Learning move: Explain “The six-commodity report is the authenticated starting evidence” in plain language, name the evidence level, record one practical control and identify what still needs qualified review.

Jurists use riba al-fadl to describe the prohibited excess evidenced when specified ribawi items of the same kind are exchanged unequally. Record kind, quantity, quality, possession and any additional benefit before seeking classification. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.

A beginner needs a usable route and an honest boundary at the same time. Learn the shared practice first, record any circumstance that changes it, and take medical, financial, disability or school-specific questions to a qualified person who can examine the real case.

Read once for meaning and a second time for boundaries. On the second reading, test strong words such as always, never, invalid and required against the complete evidence shown.

Schools and specialists analyse the effective cause and scope; a learner must not extend the category to every unequal barter without qualified study. This is general education, not a personal fatwa, halal certification, banking or insurance recommendation, investment advice, debt instruction, tax opinion, contract review or legal answer. Jurists use riba an-nasi’ah for prohibited deferment in relevant exchanges and for prohibited time-linked increase in debt, grounded in the Qur’anic debt-riba passage and exchange reports. Record when delivery, possession and repayment occur and whether extra value becomes due because of time or delay. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.

Calm completeness is the goal. Repeating an action without evidence, rushing past a required distinction, or ignoring real harm can all move the learner away from careful worship. Work through the evidence once slowly, check once, and improve through reviewed teaching.

An adult guiding a child should praise careful attention and an honest “I need to ask” answer. The aim is worship with understanding, not performance for the teacher.

The label is a juristic explanation, not a licence to decide every deferred price, settlement cycle, foreign exchange or late-payment term from one sentence.

The authenticated report makes both equality and immediate exchange visible for the same named commodity, so amount and timing must not be collapsed into one test. Use separate fields for amount, unit, quality, delivery moment, legal possession and settlement completion. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.

For a younger learner, use plain words, a visual sequence without animate imagery and one correction at a time. Adults should protect privacy, explain unfamiliar terms and never use religious teaching to shame a child.

If terminology becomes difficult, return to the practical question: what is the learner preparing to do, which step is established here, and what fact about the person or situation could change the answer?

Constructive possession and modern clearing are specialist matters; apparent screen confirmation may not settle legal or fiqh possession. This is general education, not a personal fatwa, halal certification, banking or insurance recommendation, investment advice, debt instruction, tax opinion, contract review or legal answer. Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, "Trade is [just] like interest." But Allāh has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allāh. But whoever returns [to dealing in interest or usury] – those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.

Compare · M. Pickthall

Those who swallow usury cannot rise up save as he ariseth whom the devil hath prostrated by (his) touch. That is because they say: Trade is just like usury; whereas Allah permitteth trading and forbiddeth usury. He unto whom an admonition from his Lord cometh, and (he) refraineth (in obedience thereto), he shall keep (the profits of) that which is past, and his affair (henceforth) is with Allah. As for him who returneth (to usury) – Such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

Those who devour usury will not stand except as stand one whom the Evil one by his touch Hath driven to madness. That is because they say: "Trade is like usury," but Allah hath permitted trade and forbidden usury. Those who after receiving direction from their Lord, desist, shall be pardoned for the past; their case is for Allah (to judge); but those who repeat (The offence) are companions of the Fire: They will abide therein (for ever).

Qur’an 2:275 rejects equating trade with riba, requiring the learner to distinguish a genuine exchange from a loan return. Ask what is owned, sold, delivered, used or risked rather than comparing monthly numbers alone. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.

Distinguish a revealed command, an authenticated Prophetic demonstration and a later legal classification. They work together, but they are not interchangeable. Where recognised schools differ, this resource labels the difference instead of presenting one view as the only Islam.

A resume point can preserve more than scroll position. Save the last completed step, the unresolved question and the next safe action so the learner can continue without unnecessary repetition.

A sale price above cash price is not classified here, and a product described as trade is not approved without its complete structure. This is general education, not a personal fatwa, halal certification, banking or insurance recommendation, investment advice, debt instruction, tax opinion, contract review or legal answer. And pursue not that of which thou hast no knowledge; for every act of hearing, or of seeing or of (feeling in) the heart will be enquired into (on the Day of Reckoning).

Inspect Qur’an 17:36 and the named translations on Quran.com

Qur’an 17:36 forbids following what is not known, which requires restraint when applying classical exchange rules to new instruments. Bring the currency, account type, platform terms, custody, settlement, fees and jurisdiction to reviewers who understand both fiqh and the product. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.

Save the exact point that needs review. A useful learning record says what was completed, what remains uncertain, which source was checked and who should help next. That is more valuable than a confident tick beside a misunderstood step.

Explain the practice in plain language before using legal vocabulary. If the simple sentence overstates the evidence, a technical Arabic label will not repair it.

Do not improvise a currency, token, gold, remittance or foreign-exchange ruling from price movement or an influencer’s summary.

Learning move: Explain “Modern money and exchange need named specialist analysis” in plain language, name the evidence level, record one practical control and identify what still needs qualified review.

Qur’an evidence
Qur'an-primary; controlled Quran Foundation QPC Hafs panels. Named translations are human renderings and later explanation remains separately attributed. Arabic, word alignment, transliteration and named translations are supplied through the separately labelled Quran Foundation panels.
Hadith evidence
Controlled authenticated record: muslim:1587a. Report wording, grading and personal application remain distinct. The collection and reference are preserved; a named displayed grading is not silently changed into a universal claim.
Teaching explanation
Explanatory prose, examples, diagrams and adult teaching advice are Tawheed Club editorial material. They are never presented as Qur’an, translation, tafsir or words of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him).
Release control
This item must pass source, meaning, language, editorial and release checks. Corrections remain welcome when supported by an exact source locator.

Help a learner master Riba al-Fadl and Riba an-Nasi'ah

Riba al-fadl and riba an-nasi’ah are later juristic labels used to organise revealed evidence; they are not phrases displayed in the Qur’anic riba passage. The first commonly addresses prohibited excess in specified exchanges, while the second addresses prohibited deferment or increase connected with time. Their precise definitions, causes and extension beyond the named commodities require qualified study across recognised fiqh methods. Your role is to slow the learning down, keep the exact evidence visible and make it safe for the learner to say, “I am not sure yet.”

Begin with the source

Open the named ayah or hadith before explaining it. Tell the learner whether they are seeing Arabic revelation, a reading aid, a named translation, a hadith translation or editorial teaching.

Invite an answer before helping

Ask one precise question and wait. If the learner struggles, point to the relevant line, narrow the choice or replay the audio before supplying the answer.

Correct with dignity

Praise honest checking and careful effort. Correct the idea or sound without labelling the learner, and never turn a mistake into embarrassment.

01Prepare a focused session
  1. Read Riba al-Fadl and Riba an-Nasi'ah yourself and open every cited source before inviting the learner.
  2. Choose one realistic aim from the mastery statement. Do not try to teach the whole page in one sitting.
  3. Test any Arabic audio. If a sound is outside your confidence, plan to listen together and seek correction from a capable teacher.
  4. Remove distractions and decide when to stop: about 8–10 minutes for a younger child, 15–20 minutes for ages 8–11, or 20–30 minutes for an older learner.
  5. Keep paper optional. If Qur’anic text is printed, follow the respect and waste guidance shown above the ayah panel.

Opening words: “We are going to learn one idea carefully and see exactly where it comes from. We can pause, replay and check the source whenever we need to.”

02Use a source-led teaching conversation
  1. Connect: Ask what the learner already thinks the title means. Record the answer without immediately judging it.
  2. Read or listen: Open the first evidence panel or cited report. Hear the complete Arabic before isolating one word or phrase.
  3. Notice: Ask the learner to identify the exact words that support the first teaching point. A contextual word gloss is a clue; the complete named translation supplies the sentence meaning.
  4. Explain: Read the teaching paragraph. Ask, “Which part came directly from the source, and which part is the writer helping us understand?”
  5. Apply: Choose one practice task. Keep everyday examples within the boundary of the source; do not invent promises, hidden causes or rulings.
  6. Retrieve: Close the explanation and ask the learner to state the idea, evidence locator and one careful application in their own words.
03Questions for this exact resource
  • “What does The six-commodity report is the authenticated starting evidence mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 2:278)?”
  • “What does Riba al-fadl describes prohibited excess in a juristic category mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 2:279)?”
  • “Which sentence is revelation or hadith, and which sentence is explanation?”
  • “What would be an overstatement that the cited source does not allow us to make?”
04Adapt the same truth for different ages

Ages 5–7

Teach one short source phrase and one meaning. Use text cards, colour bands, paths or simple geometric symbols—never a picture of اللّٰه (ALLAH) and never an image that implies His form. Let the child point, match, listen and repeat once or twice.

Ages 8–11

Use two or three evidence cards and ask the learner to match each idea to its locator. Invite a short explanation in their own words, then reopen the source to correct it together.

Ages 12–15

Compare the named English translations where provided. Ask what wording differs, what remains constant, and why a translation must not be called the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Ages 16+ and adults

Require a precise claim, an exact source locator and a stated boundary. Invite the learner to distinguish established meaning from inference and to mark any unresolved question for qualified review.

05Support Arabic without creating false confidence
  1. Listen to the whole ayah or supplication first.
  2. Follow the Arabic from right to left and use the word-level controls only after hearing the complete wording.
  3. Treat transliteration as temporary scaffolding. It cannot reproduce every Arabic sound.
  4. Let the learner echo a short unit, then return it to the full phrase so meaning and pronunciation remain connected.
  5. If neither of you can hear or form a sound confidently, record it for a capable Qur’an or Arabic teacher. Do not manufacture an English substitute and call it exact.

Gentle correction: “Let us listen once more and notice where the sound begins,” protects both accuracy and confidence.

06Choose one useful follow-up
  • Study every controlled evidence panel in context.
  • Complete the learning move and resume from the saved position.

Complete one task independently before adding another. Adult support should reveal the route, not hide whether the learner can use it.

07Revisit for durable mastery

After 24 hours · five minutes

  1. Ask for the central idea without showing the answer.
  2. Ask the learner to find its source locator.
  3. Replay one Arabic phrase and reconnect it to the complete meaning.
  4. Correct by reopening the source, then end with one successful retrieval.

After seven days · eight minutes

  1. Ask for the idea, source and boundary in the learner’s own words.
  2. Retry the most difficult mastery question.
  3. Apply the idea to one new but appropriate situation.
  4. Record what is secure and what needs another supported attempt.
