Parents, Family and Neighbours

The Qur’an places excellent treatment of people beside exclusive worship of the Creator. That order protects both sides: family members are treated with mercy and dignity, but no person becomes an object of worship or gains the right to command association, abuse or wrongdoing.

Primary · Saheeh International

And your Lord has decreed that you worship not except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.

Compare · M. Pickthall

Thy Lord hath decreed, that ye worship none save Him, and (that ye show) kindness to parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age with thee, say not "Fie" unto them nor repulse them, but speak unto them a gracious word.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but Him, and that ye be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in thy life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honour.

Qur’an 17:23 commands worship of the Creator alone and excellence to parents. It forbids even a contemptuous expression and harsh rebuke, especially as they age. The next ayah teaches humility from mercy and a supplication remembering their care in childhood.

Excellent treatment can include patient speech, practical service, financial help where appropriate, contact and making space for changing needs. The verses do not authorise a parent to demand worship, hide abuse or control an adult child through unlawful commands.

Qur’an 31:15 states that if parents strive to make a person associate with the Creator what they have no knowledge of, the person must not obey them, while still accompanying them in the world with appropriate kindness. The ayah refuses both false obedience and unnecessary cruelty.

Real situations may involve coercion, housing, finances, immigration status or safety. A learner should not be told to confront danger from a generic page. Preserve belief, avoid participation in wrongdoing, use calm boundaries where possible and seek confidential safeguarding, legal or qualified pastoral help.

Qur’an 4:36 begins with worship and refusal of association, then names parents, relatives, orphans, people in need, near and distant neighbours, companions, travellers and those under one’s authority in its historical wording. Tawheed therefore does not produce isolation from people’s rights.

4. Neighbour duties in the hadith record

5. Translate principles into observable conduct

Relationship Positive duty Boundary
Parents Respectful speech, service and mercy. No obedience in association or wrongdoing.
Children Care, teaching, privacy and safety. Authority does not permit humiliation or abuse.
Relatives Honest contact and support where possible. Support does not require concealing harm.
Neighbours Safety from noise, obstruction, hostility and intrusion. Kindness does not remove lawful safeguarding action.
Guests Generous, dignified treatment within ability. Hospitality does not require unsafe access or debt.

6. A family service plan

  1. Ask what help is actually needed rather than assuming.
  2. Choose one realistic act with a clear time.
  3. Speak respectfully even if the answer is no.
  4. Protect confidential information.
  5. Do not promise what cannot be delivered.
  6. If wrongdoing or danger is present, use the appropriate help route.
  7. Review whether the action reduced a burden without creating another.

7. Teaching children about boundaries

Children should learn that respect and safety belong together. They may tell a safe adult about behaviour that frightens, harms or confuses them. Adults must not weaponise “obedience” or “do not gossip” to silence a disclosure. Where immediate danger exists, use emergency or safeguarding services appropriate to the location.

Mastery

Explain the balance in Qur’an 31:15, identify the human relationships named in 4:36, and design one act of kindness that preserves belief, dignity, privacy and safety.

Help a learner master Parents, Family and Neighbours

Read the Qur’anic duties toward parents and neighbours alongside boundaries against wrongdoing and harm. The lesson offers realistic family guidance while avoiding the claim that kindness requires obedience to abuse or shirk. Your role is to slow the learning down, keep the exact evidence visible and make it safe for the learner to say, “I am not sure yet.”

Begin with the source

Open the named ayah or hadith before explaining it. Tell the learner whether they are seeing Arabic revelation, a reading aid, a named translation, a hadith translation or editorial teaching.

Invite an answer before helping

Ask one precise question and wait. If the learner struggles, point to the relevant line, narrow the choice or replay the audio before supplying the answer.

Correct with dignity

Praise honest checking and careful effort. Correct the idea or sound without labelling the learner, and never turn a mistake into embarrassment.

01Prepare a focused session
  1. Read Parents, Family and Neighbours yourself and open every cited source before inviting the learner.
  2. Choose one realistic aim from the mastery statement. Do not try to teach the whole page in one sitting.
  3. Test any Arabic audio. If a sound is outside your confidence, plan to listen together and seek correction from a capable teacher.
  4. Remove distractions and decide when to stop: about 8–10 minutes for a younger child, 15–20 minutes for ages 8–11, or 20–30 minutes for an older learner.
  5. Keep paper optional. If Qur’anic text is printed, follow the respect and waste guidance shown above the ayah panel.

Opening words: “We are going to learn one idea carefully and see exactly where it comes from. We can pause, replay and check the source whenever we need to.”

02Use a source-led teaching conversation
  1. Connect: Ask what the learner already thinks the title means. Record the answer without immediately judging it.
  2. Read or listen: Open the first evidence panel or cited report. Hear the complete Arabic before isolating one word or phrase.
  3. Notice: Ask the learner to identify the exact words that support the first teaching point. A contextual word gloss is a clue; the complete named translation supplies the sentence meaning.
  4. Explain: Read the teaching paragraph. Ask, “Which part came directly from the source, and which part is the writer helping us understand?”
  5. Apply: Choose one practice task. Keep everyday examples within the boundary of the source; do not invent promises, hidden causes or rulings.
  6. Retrieve: Close the explanation and ask the learner to state the idea, evidence locator and one careful application in their own words.
03Questions for this exact resource
  • “What does Parents with humility mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 17:23-24)?”
  • “What does No obedience in shirk mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 31:15)?”
  • “What does Neighbourly safety mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 4:36; Sahih al-Bukhari 6018)?”
  • “Which sentence is revelation or hadith, and which sentence is explanation?”
  • “What would be an overstatement that the cited source does not allow us to make?”
04Adapt the same truth for different ages

Ages 5–7

Teach one short source phrase and one meaning. Use text cards, colour bands, paths or simple geometric symbols—never a picture of اللّٰه (ALLAH) and never an image that implies His form. Let the child point, match, listen and repeat once or twice.

Ages 8–11

Use two or three evidence cards and ask the learner to match each idea to its locator. Invite a short explanation in their own words, then reopen the source to correct it together.

Ages 12–15

Compare the named English translations where provided. Ask what wording differs, what remains constant, and why a translation must not be called the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Ages 16+ and adults

Require a precise claim, an exact source locator and a stated boundary. Invite the learner to distinguish established meaning from inference and to mark any unresolved question for qualified guidance.

05Support Arabic without creating false confidence
  1. Listen to the whole ayah or supplication first.
  2. Follow the Arabic from right to left and use the word-level controls only after hearing the complete wording.
  3. Treat transliteration as temporary scaffolding. It cannot reproduce every Arabic sound.
  4. Let the learner echo a short unit, then return it to the full phrase so meaning and pronunciation remain connected.
  5. If neither of you can hear or form a sound confidently, record it for a capable Qur’an or Arabic teacher. Do not manufacture an English substitute and call it exact.

Gentle correction: “Let us listen once more and notice where the sound begins,” protects both accuracy and confidence.

06Choose one useful follow-up
  • Choose one concrete act of service for a parent or guardian.
  • Identify a boundary that protects against wrongdoing without abandoning kindness.
  • Check whether neighbours are safe from noise, obstruction or hostility caused by you.

Complete one task independently before adding another. Adult support should reveal the route, not hide whether the learner can use it.

07Revisit for durable mastery

After 24 hours · five minutes

  1. Ask for the central idea without showing the answer.
  2. Ask the learner to find its source locator.
  3. Replay one Arabic phrase and reconnect it to the complete meaning.
  4. Correct by reopening the source, then end with one successful retrieval.

After seven days · eight minutes

  1. Ask for the idea, source and boundary in the learner’s own words.
  2. Retry the most difficult mastery question.
  3. Apply the idea to one new but appropriate situation.
  4. Record what is secure and what needs another supported attempt.
