Purpose and worship · Practical reflection planner

Turn one ordinary responsibility into a thoughtful plan. Choose something manageable, connect it with a source, explain your intention and consider who else is affected. Then review what you learned. This is an optional teaching aid, not a prescribed ritual, a test of your faith or a new daily religious obligation.

1. Choose how to use your planner

This is a non-marked reflection. Read the examples, then copy the five numbered prompts onto your own paper or print the record below. The spaces are for handwriting; they are not online form fields. This page does not collect, automatically grade or save your written answers. Reading progress is separate from the content of your private notes.

You may use a fictional situation throughout. Do not record private sins, another person’s personal information or details that would make someone unsafe. A useful answer can explain a principle without revealing a real incident. Use an ordinary responsibility whose permitted nature you understand; if its ruling is uncertain, write a question for qualified guidance instead of guessing.

Before printing: use your browser’s print preview and select only the pages you need. You can copy the blank prompts onto paper instead. Avoid waste and handle any printed Qur’anic text respectfully; do not leave it carelessly among rubbish. This reminder is not a detailed ruling about disposal.

2. Keep the evidence beside the plan

Meaning in English

This is a source-bound editorial paraphrase for understanding. It is not the Arabic report and is not presented as a verbatim translation.

Editorial paraphrase

'Umar ibn al-Khattab reported that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) taught that actions are according to intentions and each person has what they intended.

Evidence use

This authenticated report establishes that intention matters to the moral and worship value of an action, while also providing a controlled example in which learners can distinguish the chain, reported wording and collection reference.

Meaning in translation

Saheeh International is the primary reading. The two named comparisons make translation choices visible; none is presented as the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Primary · Saheeh International

O you who have believed, do not violate the rites of Allāh or [the sanctity of] the sacred month or [neglect the marking of] the sacrificial animals and garlanding [them] or [violate the safety of] those coming to the Sacred House seeking bounty from their Lord and [His] approval. But when you come out of iḥrām, then [you may] hunt. And do not let the hatred of a people for having obstructed you from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām lead you to transgress. And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allāh; indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.

Compare · M. Pickthall

O ye who believe! Profane not Allah's monuments nor the Sacred Month nor the offerings nor the garlands, nor those repairing to the Sacred House, seeking the grace and pleasure of their Lord. But when ye have left the sacred territory, then go hunting (if ye will). And let not your hatred of a folk who (once) stopped your going to the inviolable place of worship seduce you to transgress; but help ye one another unto righteousness and pious duty. Help not one another unto sin and transgression, but keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is severe in punishment.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

O ye who believe! Violate not the sanctity of the symbols of Allah, nor of the sacred month, nor of the animals brought for sacrifice, nor the garlands that mark out such animals, nor the people resorting to the sacred house, seeking of the bounty and good pleasure of their Lord. But when ye are clear of the sacred precincts and of pilgrim garb, ye may hunt and let not the hatred of some people in (once) shutting you out of the Sacred Mosque lead you to transgression (and hostility on your part). Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancour: fear Allah: for Allah is strict in punishment.

Read the paired reminder about very small good and evil deeds. It encourages careful attention, not a homemade points system for final judgement. The examples below are fictional applications, not additional Qur’anic accounts.

3. Your five-part printable record

Write a short answer under each numbered label. One specific, explainable choice is enough. The blank lines are decorative writing space, not controls.

  1. Responsibility: what will I do?

Name an ordinary lawful task and when you can realistically attempt it. Avoid promises such as “I will never make a mistake again.”

  2. Source: which principle guides me?

Record the reference and explain its relevant meaning in your own words. Label your application separately from the source.

  3. Intention: why am I choosing this?

Use your own plain language. No special spoken formula or impressive religious vocabulary is required for this exercise.

  4. Rights and action: who is affected?

Identify a relevant right or boundary, one practical step and any help or permission needed.

  5. Review: what happened and what comes next?

Note what you learned, an appropriate correction or an unanswered question. Review the action without awarding yourself spiritual status.

4. Read two completed fictional records

Example A: returning a borrowed book

Responsibility
Hana will return a neighbour’s borrowed book on the agreed day.
Source
Qur’an 4:58 directs the return of trusts. The book is the fictional trust in this application.
Intention
“I want to fulfil the trust responsibly, seeking the pleasure of اللّٰه (ALLAH), rather than waiting until someone chases me.”
Rights and action
The owner should receive their book back. Hana checks the agreed arrangement with an adult and puts the book somewhere safe until the handover.
Review
The book was returned. Hana learned that checking the arrangement was more useful than assuming somebody else would deliver it. She makes no claim about a guaranteed reward.

Example B: helping a learner practise

Responsibility
Omar will help his cousin understand a practice question before an independent assignment.
Source
Qur’an 5:2 distinguishes helpful cooperation from cooperation in wrongdoing. The hadith on intention also prompts attention to his aim.
Intention
“I want to help my cousin learn, not just make the finished page look correct.”
Rights and action
The assignment must remain the cousin’s own work. Omar explains a different practice example, then lets the cousin attempt the assessed work independently.
Review
The cousin can explain the first step but still has a question. They will ask the teacher. An unfinished answer is not a reason to pretend that understanding is complete.

5. Spot the cheating counterexample

Imagine Omar instead writes the assessed answers and says, “My intention is kind because I do not want my cousin to worry.” The aim sounds caring, but the method presents somebody else’s work as the learner’s own. The plan fails at rights and action; a polished intention sentence cannot repair that contradiction.

A better response preserves the helpful aim while changing the method: explain permitted practice material, ask what assistance the teacher allows, or support the learner in requesting help. Do not simply replace “cheating” with “helping” on the record. Describe what actually happens. This is a classroom application of the source distinction, not a judgement of someone’s hidden sincerity.

6. Teach gently and review one useful step

Next step: return to the course lesson that explains the distinction you found hardest. Keep your paper yourself. Finishing the reading is a learning milestone; it is not automatic grading of your reflection or proof that a real-life task has been completed.
