What purposes does Islamic guidance help us understand? How do worship, concern for people and careful use of evidence fit together? This course introduces maqasid al-Shari‘ah, the study of the objectives of Islamic law. You do not need prior legal training to begin. You do need patience with distinctions: understanding a purpose is not the same as being qualified to decide every ruling.

1. Begin with worship, not a slogan

Qur’an study · Adh-Dhariyat

Ayah 51:56

Qur’an source
Arabic Qur’an:
وَمَا خَلَقۡتُ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَٱلۡإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُونِ ٥٦

Careful reading aid

A full learner transliteration is not displayed here. Listen to the complete ayah and use the Arabic with a capable teacher rather than guessing its sounds from English letters.

Transliteration can help you begin, but it cannot reproduce every Arabic sound or replace listening, tajwid study, or correction from a capable teacher.
Interlinear word study

Read from right to left. Each column keeps one Arabic word, its reading aid and its contextual gloss together. Select a word to hear it.

Meaning in translation

Saheeh International is the primary reading. The two named comparisons make translation choices visible; none is presented as the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Primary · Saheeh International

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.

Compare · M. Pickthall

I created the jinn and humankind only that they might worship Me.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

I have only created Jinns and men, that they may serve Me.

Open Qur’an 51:56 and the named translations on Quran.com

Read the Arabic and named translations in the panel. Qur’an 51:56 identifies worship as the purpose for which jinn and human beings were created. Concern for human welfare must not remove that foundation. The course asks how thoughtful action and care for people belong within learning to serve الله (ALLAH), rather than treating religion as a way to obtain whichever result seems easiest.

Listen to the recitation and follow the text at a manageable pace. Word aids support learning, but a short English gloss is not a complete explanation of an Arabic term. Ask a capable teacher for pronunciation correction; reaching the end of a page does not certify recitation.

2. Know which kind of information you are reading

The Qur’an, a translation of its meanings, a hadith report, a scholarly explanation and a classroom example have different roles. We identify those roles throughout the course. The familiar categories used in maqasid discussions are scholarly ways of organising understanding, not a list that the Qur’an presents under the modern course title.

The International Islamic Fiqh Academy’s resolution 167 (5/18) connects objectives with interests in this life and the Hereafter and maintains that proper application does not contradict the texts and consensus-based rulings. This is the Academy’s stated position, not a claim that every application is undisputed. The individual lessons identify the other explanations they use.

3. Follow the four connected lessons

  1. Worship and Human Welfare introduces objectives through worship, fasting, intention and thoughtful help. You will separate what a source states from what an example illustrates.
  2. Religion, Life and Intellect explores these areas of concern without turning a scholarly classification into a licence for coercion or an individual medical judgement.
  3. Family and Property considers affection, mercy, consent and truthful dealing while preserving respect for people in different family circumstances.
  4. Using Objectives without Overriding Clear Evidence examines why a desired outcome cannot replace evidence, accurate facts or qualified guidance.

Allow around thirty minutes per lesson when including the optional exercises. This is a reading estimate, not a target you must meet. Take more time for unfamiliar terms and return to earlier sections when a distinction is unclear.

4. Make the discussion useful for different ages

Adults should read ahead and select one manageable example. Younger children can discuss borrowed books, helping a new classmate or telling the truth about a broken item. They do not need to settle legal disputes or memorise specialist terminology. Accept pointing and spoken answers when writing would distract from the learning.

Older learners can compare a claim with its source, identify missing facts and prepare a question for a knowledgeable person. Do not ask children to judge a relative’s faith or disclose private family matters to complete an activity. Each lesson contains more specific guidance. The scenarios are invented teaching examples, not accounts of real people or prescribed religious exercises.

5. Track reading without confusing it with mastery

All four lessons are free and available without signing in. An account enables the site’s assignment and saved-progress features. You can begin a resource, return to partially completed reading and use your learning dashboard. A reading percentage records progress through the page; it does not judge sincerity, understanding or scholarly competence.

This release contains reading lessons with ungraded exercises and teach-back prompts. It does not add an automatically marked quiz. Before moving on, try explaining one distinction without looking at the page, then check whether your answer kept the source and your explanation separate.

6. Keep qualified guidance within reach

This is an educational introduction, not a personal fatwa or professional advice about law, health, finances or family disputes. Knowing the name of an objective does not supply all the facts or expertise needed for a difficult case. A useful learner response is to describe the situation accurately and ask the appropriate qualified person.

Use the linked Qur’an panels, authenticated report locators and named scholarly explanations to follow each claim. Start with Worship and Human Welfare, keeping this question in mind: what do I know from the evidence, and what still needs careful explanation?
