The One Message of the Messengers · lesson four

One Creed and Different Revealed Laws

The Qur’an teaches a clear continuity: the messengers called people to worship the One Creator. It also teaches that communities could receive a distinct law and method. A careful learner holds both truths together. Saying “the message was one” must not become the false claim that every detailed rule was identical. Recognising differences must not become the false claim that the messengers taught competing gods.

This lesson stays with the Qur’anic evidence. It does not reconstruct lost legal systems, borrow stories without authentication or turn a broad historical question into sectarian argument. Its purpose is to help you describe continuity, difference and the authority of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) precisely.

What you should be able to do

  • State the shared prophetic call from Qur’an 16:36 and 21:25.
  • Explain what Qur’an 42:13 connects.
  • Use Qur’an 5:48 to show that detailed revealed laws could differ.
  • Affirm all messengers without worshipping or flattening them.
  • Explain why the final messenger remains authoritative.

1. The shared call was worship of the One Creator

And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allāh and avoid ṭāghūt."1 And among them were those whom Allāh guided, and among them were those upon whom error was [deservedly] decreed. So proceed [i.e., travel] through the earth and observe how was the end of the deniers.

Compare · M. Pickthall

And verily We have raised in every nation a messenger, (proclaiming): Serve Allah and shun false gods. Then some of them (there were) whom Allah guided, and some of them (there were) upon whom error had just hold. Do but travel in the land and see the nature of the consequence for the deniers!

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

For We assuredly sent amongst every People a messenger, (with the Command), "Serve Allah, and eschew Evil": of the People were some whom Allah guided, and some on whom error became inevitably (established). So travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who denied (the Truth).

Qur’an 16:36 describes a messenger raised in every nation with a call to worship اللّٰه (ALLAH) and avoid false objects of worship. Qur’an 21:25 states that each messenger received the revelation that there is no deity except Him and therefore He must be worshipped. This is the continuity the lesson calls one creed: the truth about the One worthy of worship and the response owed to Him.

The word “one” here does not mean a committee of messengers created a compromise. Their shared foundation came through revelation. Nor does it mean every later story attributed to a prophet becomes reliable. The Qur’an supplies the controlling claim; additional details require their own source.

He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him)], and what We enjoined upon Abraham and Moses and Jesus – to establish the religion and not be divided therein. Difficult for those who associate others with Allāh is that to which you invite them. Allāh chooses for Himself whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back [to Him].

He hath ordained for you that religion which He commended unto Noah, and that which We inspire in thee (Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him)), and that which We commended unto Abraham and Moses and Jesus, saying: Establish the religion, and be not divided therein. Dreadful for the idolaters is that unto which thou callest them. Allah chooseth for Himself whom He will, and guideth unto Himself him who turneth (toward Him).

The salutation is an editorial addition; the stored translation is unchanged.
Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

The same religion has He established for you as that which He enjoined on Noah – the which We have sent by inspiration to thee – and that which We enjoined on Abraham, Moses, and Jesus: Namely, that ye should remain steadfast in religion, and make no divisions therein: to those who worship other things than Allah, hard is the (way) to which thou callest them. Allah chooses to Himself those whom He pleases, and guides to Himself those who turn (to Him).

Qur’an 42:13 connects what was enjoined upon Noah with what was revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him), and what was enjoined upon Abraham, Moses and Jesus. The ayah commands establishment of the religion and warns against division within it.

The passage lets us affirm continuity in the revealed religion. It does not give us permission to merge every historical legal detail into one imagined code. It also does not make the messenger receiving the Qur’an optional. The same ayah names his revelation within the connected chain.

And We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him)], the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allāh has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method. Had Allāh willed, He would have made you one nation [united in religion], but [He intended] to test you in what He has given you; so race to [all that is] good. To Allāh is your return all together, and He will [then] inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.

The salutation is an editorial addition; the stored translation is unchanged.
Compare · M. Pickthall

And unto thee have We revealed the Scripture with the truth, confirming whatever Scripture was before it, and a watcher over it. So judge between them by that which Allah hath revealed, and follow not their desires away from the truth which hath come unto thee. For each We have appointed a divine law and a traced-out way. Had Allah willed He could have made you one community. But that He may try you by that which He hath given you (He hath made you as ye are). So vie one with another in good works. Unto Allah ye will all return, and He will then inform you of that wherein ye differ.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so judge between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that hath come to thee. To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way. If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah; it is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute;

Qur’an 5:48 is essential because it prevents careless overstatement. It speaks of the Qur’an sent in truth, confirming and overseeing previous scripture, and states that for each was appointed a law and a method. The lesson therefore distinguishes the enduring foundation of worship from every detailed legal arrangement.

A simple classroom example is enough: two courses can pursue the same central outcome while using different schedules. That analogy is editorial and limited; revelation is not a school timetable. Its purpose is only to help a learner understand that shared purpose does not logically require identical details.

Continuity

One Creator, exclusive worship, revelation, messengers and accountability.

Difference

The Qur’an states that a law and method were appointed; the lesson does not invent the content of a former law.

4. Belief in the messengers is not selective

These ayahs teach belief in what was revealed to the named messengers without making a division that accepts some and rejects others according to preference. Muslims therefore honour the messengers named in revelation. They do not worship them, attribute divinity to them or treat every later story about them as authenticated.

This produces a respectful way to speak with people of other backgrounds. Begin with what the Qur’an affirms. Do not insult a prophet they revere, and do not claim agreement where the Qur’an makes a distinction. Respectful clarity is not hostility; vague agreement is not honesty.

Inspect Qur’an 4:80 and the named translations on Quran.com

Qur’an 33:40 identifies Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) as the Messenger of اللّٰه (ALLAH) and the seal of the prophets. Qur’an 4:80 connects obedience to the messenger with obedience to the One who sent him. He is followed as messenger; he is not worshipped.

The logic is coherent: the One Creator sent messengers with one foundation; He may prescribe law; and the final messenger conveys the Qur’an and authenticated Sunnah for the Muslim community. Claiming continuity while refusing the final message would use one part of the Qur’an against another.

6. Build an evidence map

Question Locator Safe conclusion
What did every messenger call people to? 16:36; 21:25 Worship the One Creator and reject false worship.
Which named prophetic lines are connected? 42:13 A shared revealed religious foundation is affirmed.
Could detailed law differ? 5:48 Yes; the ayah names a law and method for each.
How are Muslims to regard the messengers? 2:136; 3:84 Believe without selective rejection.
What is the place of the final messenger? 33:40; 4:80 He is the final messenger to be obeyed as messenger, not worshipped.

Mark any claim about a particular former law, date or event that is not contained in this map. It may be true, false or uncertain, but it needs a separate source record before it can be taught. This habit prevents a clean Qur’anic lesson from becoming a container for inherited stories.

Help a learner master One Creed and Different Revealed Laws

See from the Qur’an how every messenger called to the One Creator while communities could receive distinct revealed laws. Your role is to slow the learning down, keep the exact evidence visible and make it safe for the learner to say, “I am not sure yet.”

Begin with the source

Open the named ayah or hadith before explaining it. Tell the learner whether they are seeing Arabic revelation, a reading aid, a named translation, a hadith translation or editorial teaching.

Invite an answer before helping

Ask one precise question and wait. If the learner struggles, point to the relevant line, narrow the choice or replay the audio before supplying the answer.

Correct with dignity

Praise honest checking and careful effort. Correct the idea or sound without labelling the learner, and never turn a mistake into embarrassment.

01Prepare a focused session
  1. Read One Creed and Different Revealed Laws yourself and open every cited source before inviting the learner.
  2. Choose one realistic aim from the mastery statement. Do not try to teach the whole page in one sitting.
  3. Test any Arabic audio. If a sound is outside your confidence, plan to listen together and seek correction from a capable teacher.
  4. Remove distractions and decide when to stop: about 8–10 minutes for a younger child, 15–20 minutes for ages 8–11, or 20–30 minutes for an older learner.
  5. Keep paper optional. If Qur’anic text is printed, follow the respect and waste guidance shown above the ayah panel.

Opening words: “We are going to learn one idea carefully and see exactly where it comes from. We can pause, replay and check the source whenever we need to.”

02Use a source-led teaching conversation
  1. Connect: Ask what the learner already thinks the title means. Record the answer without immediately judging it.
  2. Read or listen: Open the first evidence panel or cited report. Hear the complete Arabic before isolating one word or phrase.
  3. Notice: Ask the learner to identify the exact words that support the first teaching point. A contextual word gloss is a clue; the complete named translation supplies the sentence meaning.
  4. Explain: Read the teaching paragraph. Ask, “Which part came directly from the source, and which part is the writer helping us understand?”
  5. Apply: Choose one practice task. Keep everyday examples within the boundary of the source; do not invent promises, hidden causes or rulings.
  6. Retrieve: Close the explanation and ask the learner to state the idea, evidence locator and one careful application in their own words.
03Questions for this exact resource
  • “What does One call to worship mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 16:36; 21:25)?”
  • “What does A shared revealed foundation mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 42:13)?”
  • “What does Different law and method mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 5:48)?”
  • “Which sentence is revelation or hadith, and which sentence is explanation?”
  • “What would be an overstatement that the cited source does not allow us to make?”
04Adapt the same truth for different ages

Ages 5–7

Teach one short source phrase and one meaning. Use text cards, colour bands, paths or simple geometric symbols—never a picture of اللّٰه (ALLAH) and never an image that implies His form. Let the child point, match, listen and repeat once or twice.

Ages 8–11

Use two or three evidence cards and ask the learner to match each idea to its locator. Invite a short explanation in their own words, then reopen the source to correct it together.

Ages 12–15

Compare the named English translations where provided. Ask what wording differs, what remains constant, and why a translation must not be called the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Ages 16+ and adults

Require a precise claim, an exact source locator and a stated boundary. Invite the learner to distinguish established meaning from inference and to mark any unresolved question for qualified review.

05Support Arabic without creating false confidence
  1. Listen to the whole ayah or supplication first.
  2. Follow the Arabic from right to left and use the word-level controls only after hearing the complete wording.
  3. Treat transliteration as temporary scaffolding. It cannot reproduce every Arabic sound.
  4. Let the learner echo a short unit, then return it to the full phrase so meaning and pronunciation remain connected.
  5. If neither of you can hear or form a sound confidently, record it for a capable Qur’an or Arabic teacher. Do not manufacture an English substitute and call it exact.

Gentle correction: “Let us listen once more and notice where the sound begins,” protects both accuracy and confidence.

06Choose one useful follow-up
  • Build a two-column continuity-and-difference map.
  • State only what the named ayah establishes.
  • Keep equal belief in the messengers distinct from erasing the final message.
  • Mark historical details that require a separate source.

Complete one task independently before adding another. Adult support should reveal the route, not hide whether the learner can use it.

07Revisit for durable mastery

After 24 hours · five minutes

  1. Ask for the central idea without showing the answer.
  2. Ask the learner to find its source locator.
  3. Replay one Arabic phrase and reconnect it to the complete meaning.
  4. Correct by reopening the source, then end with one successful retrieval.

After seven days · eight minutes

  1. Ask for the idea, source and boundary in the learner’s own words.
  2. Retry the most difficult mastery question.
  3. Apply the idea to one new but appropriate situation.
  4. Record what is secure and what needs another supported attempt.
