What Is Tawheed al-Asma wa Sifat?

Tawheed foundations · knowing your Creator as revelation identifies Him

Tawheed al-Asma wa Sifat is a scholarly teaching label for knowing اللّٰه (ALLAH) through the Beautiful Names and perfect attributes revealed in the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah. A learner affirms what revelation says while knowing that nothing resembles Him, and refuses invented Names, bodily images and unsupported claims about “how”.

The answer in plain language

Asma means Names and sifat means attributes or descriptions. This part of tawheed teaches that the Creator is known as He truthfully identifies Himself. His Names are supremely beautiful and His attributes are perfect. Created beings do not share His unlimited, incomparable reality merely because an English word such as “knowing” or “merciful” can also be used in a limited human sentence.

There are two errors to avoid. One is imagining اللّٰه (ALLAH) as a larger version of creation. The other is treating His revealed Names as empty words with no truthful guidance. Qur’an 42:11 places the safety boundary in one ayah: nothing is like Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

The Beautiful Names belong to اللّٰه (ALLAH)

Qur’an 20:8 joins exclusive deity to ownership of the Most Beautiful Names. The Names are not a human branding exercise or a collection of flattering ideas chosen by taste.

The verse says that the Names belong to Him. That makes revelation the starting point. A translation such as “the Most Merciful” helps an English reader approach meaning, but the translation is not identical to the Arabic Name and cannot carry every shade of its Qur’anic use.

A Name identifies اللّٰه (ALLAH) with a revealed form. An attribute describes a perfection established by revelation. A Name may indicate an attribute, but not every sentence about a Divine action becomes a new stand-alone Name. Grammar, context and evidence matter.

This distinction also protects supplication. Learners can call upon اللّٰه (ALLAH) using an established Beautiful Name with confidence, while explanatory sentences remain explanations unless sound evidence establishes them as Names.

Learn the Names and call upon Him by them

Qur’an 7:180 tells believers that the Most Beautiful Names belong to اللّٰه (ALLAH) and directs them to call upon Him by those Names. It also warns against deviation concerning them.

This gives learning a purpose. The Names are not merely memorised sounds. A person asks the Most Merciful for mercy, the All-Knowing for guidance and the Forgiving for forgiveness, using Names established by evidence and understanding that the English gloss remains a reading aid.

The warning also requires restraint. We should not invent a Divine Name from every admired adjective, alter a revealed Name for effect, or use sacred language as decoration without meaning. Jordan’s General Iftaa Department records the widely recognised principle that Divine naming requires textual authorization. The Qur’an, authentic Sunnah and recognised scholarly evidence—not imagination—control the list.

The controlling balance: no likeness and truthful affirmation

Qur’an 42:11 is the central safeguard. It denies every likeness and, in the same sentence, affirms that اللّٰه (ALLAH) hears and sees.

The first part stops the learner from drawing, modelling or mentally enlarging a creature. The second stops the learner from erasing what revelation communicates. Divine hearing is not a created organ, process or limitation. Divine sight is not an eye, angle, distance or dependency like ours. The ayah teaches truth without resemblance.

We therefore do not ask “what does He look like?” or “how does this attribute work?” Human experience supplies only created examples, so it cannot map the essence of the Creator. Saying “we do not know how” is not ignorance of the revelation; it is honesty about the boundary revelation gives us.

Human vision does not encompass Him

This corrects the desire to make the unseen Creator visually manageable. We know Him through His signs, revelation and Names, not through an image. A picture of light, a galaxy, a throne room or a powerful human is still created and must never be presented as a depiction of اللّٰه (ALLAH).

The page’s cosmic art and gold typography are therefore design symbols of human reverence, not representations of the Divine essence. Sacred grandeur should lead to humility, not visual invention.

Paired reading prevents a learner from reducing one Name to a crude spatial picture. The sequence teaches comprehensive Divine perfection and human limitation. It does not license a diagram placing اللّٰه (ALLAH) inside, outside or along a created timeline.

This is why each Divine Name page should show its ayah context, related Names and translation limits. A one-word flashcard is useful for recall, but it is not a complete theology.

Read Qur’an 59:22–24 as one connected passage

The closing passage of Surah al-Hashr brings together exclusive deity, knowledge, mercy, sovereignty, holiness, peace, security, guardianship, might, creation and wisdom. Each ayah is displayed separately so the Arabic remains precise, but the sequence should be read together.

Primary · Saheeh International

He is Allāh, the Creator,1 the Producer,2 the Fashioner;3 to Him belong the best names.4 Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.5

Compare · M. Pickthall

He is Allah, the Creator, the Shaper out of naught, the Fashioner. His are the most beautiful names. All that is in the heavens and the earth glorifieth Him, and He is the Mighty, the Wise.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

He is Allah, the Creator, the Evolver, the Bestower of Forms (or Colours). To Him belong the Most Beautiful Names: whatever is in the heavens and on earth, doth declare His Praises and Glory: and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Inspect Qur’an 59:24 and the named translations on Quran.com

The passage does not give isolated labels for collecting. It identifies the One worthy of worship, speaks about unseen and seen reality, and closes with creation glorifying Him. Some Names appear beside other Names because the pairing protects and enriches meaning.

Translation differences are especially visible here. English renderings may choose “Sovereign”, “King”, “Source of Peace”, “Giver of Security” or another contextual gloss. Tawheed Club names each translator and does not pretend that an English phrase exhausts the Arabic.

Are there exactly 99 Names?

Tawheed Club has a structured 99-name learning collection and ten authenticated supplemental-name pages. That is an evidence-controlled curriculum, not a claim that every Divine Name is exhausted by one universally agreed list.

The well-known authentic narration about ninety-nine Names teaches immense virtue in learning, preserving and living by them. Scholars have differed over the exact compiled list, and other authentic texts contain Names not included in some popular posters. The safe statement is that ninety-nine have a particular promised virtue; it does not follow that اللّٰه (ALLAH) possesses only ninety-nine Names.

This introductory article does not use that narration to construct a new list. Every name page must retain its own Qur’an or authenticated-hadith evidence record.

Why scholars sometimes explain expressions differently

Major Sunni scholarly traditions agree that اللّٰه (ALLAH) is perfect, incomparable and unlike bodies, places or created limitations. They also agree that revelation must be treated with reverence. They have differed over the safest method for explaining some expressions.

One method affirms the revealed wording and its fitting meaning while refusing distortion, denial, resemblance and any claim about modality. Another consigns the detailed intended reality to اللّٰه (ALLAH) while firmly denying a bodily meaning. Another uses contextually supported interpretation where a created or bodily reading would be impossible.

This page does not declare one school outside Islam or pretend that a beginner’s slogan resolves centuries of scholarship. Its shared boundary is firm: preserve revelation, deny likeness, reject bodily imagination, do not invent “how”, and consult qualified scholarship where an expression is disputed.

Quoting one side’s insult about another would not glorify اللّٰه (ALLAH). Accuracy requires reporting the disagreement without caricature.

What the Names should change in us

Knowing the Names is meant to deepen worship and character, not give a person a feeling of superiority.

Knowledge
Knowing that اللّٰه (ALLAH) knows should make a learner honest in private, not curious about how Divine knowledge operates.
Mercy
Calling upon the Most Merciful should grow hope and mercy towards creation, without claiming human mercy equals His.
Power
Knowing complete Divine power should humble limited human authority and prevent despair.
Hearing and sight
The believer remembers that no whispered prayer or hidden injustice escapes Him, without imagining created organs.
Holiness and peace
These Names call a person away from impurity and harm, while the human response remains limited and accountable.

A safe method for studying any Divine Name

  1. Locate the evidence. Record the exact ayah or authenticated narration.
  2. Keep the Arabic controlled. Never retype sacred text from memory.
  3. Name the translation. Treat it as a human rendering of meaning.
  4. Read the surrounding passage. Notice paired Names, actions and the audience.
  5. Use attributed tafsir. Do not blend commentary into revelation.
  6. State the limit. Reject likeness and do not claim modality.
  7. Apply it carefully. Connect the Name to worship, supplication and conduct without making promises the source does not make.

How an adult can teach this to a child

Begin with Qur’an 42:11 and two text cards: “Nothing is like Him” and “He hears and sees”. Explain that both sentences are true together. Do not ask the child to picture اللّٰه (ALLAH), and do not use a person, animal, sun or galaxy as a likeness.

Choose one revealed Name from Qur’an 59:22–24. Read its controlled panel, listen to the complete ayah, compare the named translations and ask: What does the ayah tell us? What does it not tell us? Let “we do not know how” be an honourable answer.

For an older learner, compare two translations of one Name. Ask why one English word cannot carry the whole Arabic context. Then open the relevant Divine Name page and check its evidence record before discussing a personal lesson.

Common misunderstandings

“Every positive adjective can become a Name of اللّٰه (ALLAH).”
No. Divine naming requires authorization; a true description in one context is not automatically a stand-alone Name.
“Using the same English word makes Creator and creation alike.”
No. Qur’an 42:11 affirms hearing and sight while denying every likeness. Created qualities are limited and dependent.
“We must imagine something when reading an attribute.”
No. Mental pictures come from created experience and cannot depict the Creator.
“Saying there is no likeness means the Names communicate nothing.”
No. The Qur’an gives truthful guidance while withholding the modality and essence from human grasp.
“Every scholar explains every expression identically.”
No. Interpretive methods differ. Shared reverence, perfection and rejection of bodily likeness must not be hidden.
“The 99-name collection proves there are only 99 Names.”
No. It is a structured collection linked to a particular authentic virtue, not an exhaustive limit.

Questions people often ask

What is the simplest definition of tawheed al-Asma wa Sifat?

It is knowing اللّٰه (ALLAH) by the Names and perfect attributes established in revelation, while affirming that nothing resembles Him.

What is the difference between a Name and an attribute?

A Name identifies اللّٰه (ALLAH) in a revealed form and indicates perfection; an attribute describes a perfection. Not every grammatical description becomes a stand-alone Name.

Can translations be used in supplication?

A learner may understand and pray in a language they know, but should not present an invented English label as though it were an established Arabic Divine Name.

Why can we not ask how an attribute is?

Because “how” demands a modality. Revelation tells us truth about the Creator while Qur’an 42:11 denies comparison with creation.

Should children memorise the Names?

Yes, with meaning, evidence, pronunciation support and conduct. Memorisation should not be separated from knowing who is named.

Where should I continue?

Sources and review record

Primary Qur’anic evidence: Qur’an 6:103, 7:180, 20:8, 42:11, 57:3 and 59:22–24. Arabic and word-level presentation use Tawheed Club’s controlled Quran Foundation QPC Hafs snapshot. Named translations and tafsir remain attributed.

Naming boundary: Jordanian General Iftaa Department Fatwa 2914 was checked for the textual-authorization principle. Its Aqida materials and Fatwa 4020 were checked as evidence of one recognised interpretive method; opposing polemics were not imported.

Method boundary: the page reports shared principles and the existence of Athari, tafwid and contextual ta’wil approaches without adjudicating a school or issuing a personal verdict.

Important limits: no invented Name, exhaustive 99-name claim, bodily image, modality, unsourced count, prior-scripture analysis or sectarian judgement.
