A careful first-week guide · Evidence, family care and medical safety
Welcome a newborn with gratitude, safe care, a good name and gentle support for the family. Islam has reported practices connected with birth, but they do not all carry the same evidence or legal ruling. This guide labels what is Qur’an-led, authentically reported, disputed in application, cultural or medical. It does not turn one family’s custom into a duty for everyone.
Welcome the baby with gratitude, safety and no gender shame
The first hours do not need to become a performance. Make sure baby and recovering parent receive the checks, treatment, food, rest and privacy they need. Give thanks to اللّٰه (ALLAH), share news with consent and let non-urgent plans wait. A calm room and a protected feeding attempt may be more valuable than a crowded visit.

These ayat begin with daughters, then sons, then families given both and those given no children. They locate every family circumstance within divine knowledge and power. They do not authorise us to tell a particular couple why they experienced infertility, miscarriage, disability or loss. They also refuse the idea that a daughter is a lesser gift.
What matters immediately?
- Follow the maternity or neonatal team’s care plan and attend required checks.
- Keep the baby warm and feed according to current clinical advice.
- Protect the recovering parent’s rest, medication, hydration and privacy.
- Record urgent contact numbers before everyone is tired.
- Delay visitors or a ritual if either patient needs care.
This list sets priorities; it does not diagnose a baby. Local clinical guidance controls safe sleep, feeding, cord care, vitamin K, screening and vaccination. A web article cannot inspect colour, breathing, weight or recovery.

Ayah 16:59

The passage condemns the shame attached to news of a girl. That warning still matters when relatives ask for a son, praise one sex more loudly, give unequal gifts or speak as though a mother caused the baby’s sex. Do not turn an old injustice into a family joke.
When a birth was difficult
Gratitude does not require pretending that labour, surgery, neonatal care or feeding was easy. Parents can be thankful and exhausted, joyful and frightened. Do not pressure them to retell trauma, host visitors or publish photographs. If this birth ended in loss, stop this celebratory route and seek a dedicated grief and clinical pathway.
Give the child a good name without inventing one deadline
Authentic reports show naming close to birth, while other reports connect naming with the seventh day. That gives families evidence for more than one recognised time; it should not become an argument at the bedside.
What makes a name good?
A good name has a sound meaning, does not contain worship of anyone besides the Creator, and does not humiliate the child. Detailed naming rules—Divine Names, titles, lineage, surnames, adopted children and local registration—belong with qualified fiqh and legal review. A search result’s “Islamic baby-name meaning” is not proof; check the original language and actual usage.
Naming at birth and on the seventh day
Sahih al-Bukhari 5467 records Abu Musa’s child being named Ibrahim and blessed by the Prophet. Sunan Abi Dawud 2838 (Sahih, Al-Albani) and Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 1522 (Sahih, Darussalam) connect naming, shaving and aqiqah with the seventh day. These reports should be read together; this guide does not declare a family sinful for choosing a different naming time. Detailed legal application belongs with a qualified scholar.

Register the birth properly
Legal registration protects identity, health care and other rights. Follow the deadline and documentation rules where the child was born. If the chosen name uses Arabic sounds that local forms cannot reproduce, decide the spelling carefully and keep it consistent. Transliteration differences are not automatically religious errors.
Announcing the name
Share only what the parents have agreed. A baby’s full legal name, exact birth time, hospital, address and document images can create privacy and identity risks. A simple first name announcement may be enough. Do not make publication a condition of celebration.
Label adhan, tahnik, shaving and aqiqah by their evidence
These practices are often placed in one checklist, but their evidence and legal details differ. “Mentioned in a report” does not always mean “obligatory in this exact form.”
Adhan in the ear
Not used here as an established recommendation. The displayed gradings differ: Sunan Abi Dawud 5105 is labelled Hasan (Al-Albani), while Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 1514 is labelled Da‘if (Darussalam). This does not mean that every scholar judged the report weak. Under this website’s cautious evidence policy, the unresolved grading difference means that we do not include ear-adhan as an instructed newborn practice.
The left-ear iqamah is also excluded from the recommended practices in this guide because reliable supporting evidence has not been established in this review. Neither practice should be used to question a parent’s faith or care.
Tahnik
Authentic reports in Sahih al-Bukhari describe newborns being brought to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him), named or blessed, and tahnik performed with date. The occurrence is established, but its general application, blessing context and safest modern method require hadith, fiqh and neonatal review.
This page does not give a method. Never put a whole date, sticky piece or honey into a newborn’s mouth. Honey must not be given to babies under twelve months according to current NHS guidance. Choking, aspiration and infection are medical risks. Ask a qualified clinician before attempting anything by mouth beyond the baby’s approved feed.
Aqiqah
Reports connect aqiqah with a newborn and the seventh day, and another reports two comparable animals for a boy and one for a girl. Qualified jurists differ over its legal degree, timing when the seventh day is missed and other details. The allocation is not a scale of human worth: Qur’an 42:49 begins by naming daughters as gifts.

- Arabic scope
- The two comparable sheep for a boy and one for a girl wording is retained. It is not a statement of unequal human worth and does not settle financial ability or legal degree.
- Evidence boundary
- The allocation is not unequal dignity and must not create debt or shame.
Do not borrow unsafely, miss rent, neglect food or shame a low-income family to fund an aqiqah. Slaughter, animal welfare, food hygiene, distribution and local law require competent arrangements. A family meal can be modest. An expensive decorated event is not the measure of acceptance.
Shaving and silver
Shaving is mentioned in the separately cited Sunan Abi Dawud 2838 (Sahih, Al-Albani). The silver-by-hair-weight report in Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 1519 has a displayed Hasan grade (Darussalam), but al-Tirmidhi’s accompanying note says that its chain is not connected. This guide therefore does not instruct a calculated silver payment or claim a fixed reward on that report’s authority. General charity can be offered without treating this disputed calculation as a proven requirement. Ask qualified religious and neonatal professionals about any proposed shaving; this page provides no procedure.
Feeding and family care are rights, not a competition
Feeding can become a place of joy, worry and unfair judgment. The Qur’an’s family framework includes breastfeeding, maintenance, consultation and a prohibition on harming either parent through the child.

Saheeh International is the primary reading. The two named comparisons make translation choices visible; none is presented as the Arabic Qur’an itself.
Mothers may nurse [i.e., breastfeed] their children two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing [period]. Upon the father is their [i.e., the mothers'] provision and their clothing according to what is acceptable. No person is charged with more than his capacity. No mother should be harmed through her child, and no father through his child. And upon the [father's] heir is [a duty] like that [of the father]. And if they both desire weaning through mutual consent from both of them and consultation, there is no blame upon either of them. And if you wish to have your children nursed by a substitute, there is no blame upon you as long as you give payment according to what is acceptable. And fear Allāh and know that Allāh is Seeing of what you do.
Mothers shall suckle their children for two whole years; (that is) for those who wish to complete the suckling. The duty of feeding and clothing nursing mothers in a seemly manner is upon the father of the child. No-one should be charged beyond his capacity. A mother should not be made to suffer because of her child, nor should he to whom the child is born (be made to suffer) because of his child. And on the (father's) heir is incumbent the like of that (which was incumbent on the father). If they desire to wean the child by mutual consent and (after) consultation, it is no sin for them; and if ye wish to give your children out to nurse, it is no sin for you, provide that ye pay what is due from you in kindness. Observe your duty to Allah, and know that Allah is Seer of what ye do.
The mothers shall give such to their offspring for two whole years, if the father desires to complete the term. But he shall bear the cost of their food and clothing on equitable terms. No soul shall have a burden laid on it greater than it can bear. No mother shall be Treated unfairly on account of her child. Nor father on account of his child, an heir shall be chargeable in the same way. If they both decide on weaning, by mutual consent, and after due consultation, there is no blame on them. If ye decide on a foster-mother for your offspring, there is no blame on you, provided ye pay (the mother) what ye offered, on equitable terms. But fear Allah and know that Allah sees well what ye do.

The ayah mentions two complete years for one who wishes to complete breastfeeding and places responsibilities around that choice. It also recognises consultation and alternative nursing arrangements. The verse requires named tafsir and fiqh; it is not a slogan for blaming a parent whose milk supply, medication, health, employment, adoption or baby’s condition changes the feeding plan.
Follow the baby’s clinical feeding plan
Breast milk has recognised benefits, and skilled support may solve pain, positioning or supply problems. Some babies need expressed milk, donor milk where safely regulated, formula, fortification, tube feeding or a combination. Follow qualified local advice for preparation, sterilisation, amounts, weight monitoring and signs that urgent help is needed. Do not dilute feeds or use homemade substitutes.
Support the person doing the feeding
Bring water and food, handle washing and practical tasks, protect sleep, and take responsibility for appointments. Do not turn every feed into an inspection. If pain, bleeding, fever, severe headache, breathing difficulty or another physical concern appears, contact maternity care. Follow your local maternity service’s urgent-help advice; this list is not exhaustive.
Postpartum mental health matters
Tearfulness, exhaustion and adjustment are common, but severe confusion, hallucinations, rapidly changing extreme mood, inability to sleep despite opportunity, or risk to parent or baby can require urgent assessment. Postpartum psychosis is a medical emergency. Contact urgent local services rather than waiting for a religious gathering or trying to manage it privately.
Safe sleep is not a family-opinion contest
Use current local safer-sleep guidance. In the UK, NHS guidance includes placing the baby on their back in a clear, separate sleep space with a firm, flat mattress and keeping them in the same room as a parent for the first six months. Do not override current clinical advice because an older relative says a different position “worked for us.”
Separate Sunnah from culture, pressure and unsafe practice
Culture can provide language, food, clothing and generous care. The problem begins when a custom is called worship without evidence or enforced through fear.
Helpful custom
Preparing meals, organising transport, taking older children to school and giving parents quiet time can be valuable. A culturally familiar dish or welcome message is not automatically Sunnah, but it may be a good permissible act. Say “our family does this” instead of “Islam requires this” unless the evidence supports the second sentence.
Custom that needs correction
Do not place an amulet, bead, thread, metal object, smoke, salt or written charm on a baby and claim that the object protects independently. Protection and supplication need their own evidence-led lesson. Anything around a baby’s neck or sleep space can also create physical danger.
A forty-day visiting rule, special colour, compulsory party or ban on leaving home is not automatically revelation. A clinician may recommend infection precautions or recovery limits for a particular family; that medical plan is different from turning a regional custom into a universal religious command.
Visitors need consent
Ask before visiting, holding, kissing, feeding or photographing the baby. Stay away when unwell and follow the parents’ hygiene rules. Do not wake a baby for a photograph or insist that the recovering parent serve guests. Kindness is measured by reducing the family’s load.
Circumcision needs its own qualified pathway
This guide does not instruct circumcision. Questions of ruling, timing, consent, pain control, practitioner competence, regulation, contraindications and aftercare require qualified fiqh, medical, legal and safeguarding review. Never attempt a home procedure from a video or unverified instruction.
Protect the baby’s digital privacy
A newborn cannot understand a permanent public profile. Use the least information needed, restrict audiences and do not publish medical devices, naked or intimate images, documents, location data or distress. “Everyone is waiting to see” is not consent.
Use a calm first-week plan and inspect every source
This plan is deliberately small. Clinical instructions and the family’s actual capacity come before its order.
Today
- Protect baby and recovering parent’s health, rest, feeding and privacy.
- Give thanks and make simple, sound supplication.
- Agree who may receive news or visit.
- Choose or confirm the name if ready; check registration deadlines.
When medically safe
- Ask a qualified scholar and clinician about any proposed tahnik.
- Use the verified sources above; ear-adhan is not included in this guide’s recommended practices because its grading remains disputed.
- Do not add a left-ear iqamah as an established companion practice without verified evidence.
- Keep every ritual separate from urgent treatment.
Around the seventh day
- Discuss aqiqah, naming and shaving with a qualified teacher who discloses differences.
- Make a plan that fits financial means and local law.
- Do not shave or put anything in the baby’s mouth without safety approval.
- Continue screening, feeding support and postnatal follow-up.
