Divine Names study

A clear first meaning

Al-Afuww is a revealed Name of اللّٰه (ALLAH). The Pardoning is the primary short rendering on this page. “Oft-Pardoning” appears repeatedly in the named translations. The Arabic form الْعَفُوُّ deserves more than the casual English phrase “let it go,” so every explanation remains tied to its Qur’anic sentence.

What the controlled corpus shows

The exact-lemma search currently records five candidates across three surahs, from Qur’an 4:43 to 58:2. Four adjacency candidates place Al-Afuww before Al-Ghafur, and Qur’an 4:149 places the wording before Al-Qadir. Basmalah counting does not affect the total.

The number five describes exact-form candidates, not every Qur’anic use of the broader root of pardon. Related verbs are studied separately so that an action is not silently counted as the title.

Qur’an 4:149 is unusually helpful for teaching because the sentence speaks first about people showing or concealing good and pardoning an offence, then describes اللّٰه (ALLAH) with Al-Afuww and Al-Qadir. The human action is created, limited and commanded within a situation; the Divine Name belongs to the Creator and is not comparable in mode or perfection.

The pairing with Al-Qadir matters. Pardon is not inability to act. The verse joins pardon to complete ability or power. That prevents the learner from defining Divine pardon as helplessness.

Four candidate passages place Al-Afuww directly before Al-Ghafur. English often renders the pair as pardoning and forgiving. The two words overlap, but the Qur’an’s repeated pairing shows that translators are not simply repeating the same English word twice.

A common teaching claim says pardon means completely erasing a sin while forgiveness means covering it. That may appear in later explanations, but this page will not present it as a settled Qur’anic definition without a qualified Arabic source and full contextual review. A safer statement is that the revealed pair contains related but distinguishable pardon and forgiveness language.

The du‘a taught for Laylat al-Qadr

Sunan Ibn Majah 3850 records that ‘Aishah asked Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) what to say if she encountered Laylat al-Qadr. He taught:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul-‘afwa fa‘fu ‘anni.

O اللّٰه (ALLAH), You are Pardoning and love pardon, so pardon me.

The inspected record displays a Sahih grading. The du‘a directly preserves the wording ‘Afuww and asks for ‘afw. It is stronger evidence for the Name than an anonymous poster or unattributed list.

Do not turn the du‘a into a guaranteed technique that forces a chosen worldly result. It is worship and a request. Its value comes from whom the servant calls upon and from the authentic teaching of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him), not from decorative typography or a prescribed count that the report does not state.

Pardoning people does not abolish safeguarding

Qur’an 4:149 praises pardon in a moral context, but no general encouragement to pardon should be used to conceal continuing harm. Someone may choose personal pardon while still reporting abuse, protecting a child, recovering stolen property or allowing a lawful authority to act. Pardon is not permission for the offender to demand access to the person harmed.

For children, teach the difference between releasing personal revenge and keeping safe boundaries. A child should never be told that Al-Afuww requires them to keep an unsafe secret.

How to respond

Use the authentic du‘a with understanding. Ask اللّٰه (ALLAH) for pardon, especially during Laylat al-Qadr, while also making sincere tawbah. When another person makes a small mistake, consider whether pardon will repair the relationship. When serious harm is involved, seek wise and lawful guidance.

Remember the pairing with Al-Qadir: Divine pardon is chosen with full power. Human pardon may be beautiful, but human beings remain limited and must not imitate Divine authority or claim to erase obligations that belong to someone else.

Learn it at your level

First encounter

Al-Afuww is a Name of اللّٰه (ALLAH) commonly rendered “the Pardoning.”

Ages 5–7 with an adult

Teach the short du‘a by listening in small phrases, without claiming Latin letters reproduce every Arabic sound.

Ages 8–11

Read Qur’an 4:149 and find the human action, the Divine Name and the paired Name.

Ages 12–15

Explain why pardon and safe boundaries can exist together.

Ages 16+ and adults

Compare the four Al-Afuww/Al-Ghafur candidates and record their surrounding subjects.

Adult teaching guide

Start with Qur’an 4:149. Ask what humans are invited to do and which two descriptions close the verse. Then teach the Laylat al-Qadr du‘a from the authenticated record. Keep Qur’an and hadith labels visible so the learner knows the source of each text.

Use retrieval after a day: ask which Name is paired with Al-Afuww in Qur’an 4:149. After a week, ask the learner to explain why pardon does not mean hiding danger. This combines source knowledge with responsible application.

Check your understanding

  1. How many exact-form candidates are currently recorded?
  2. Which Name follows Al-Afuww in four adjacency candidates?
  3. Which Name is paired in Qur’an 4:149?
  4. What authentic du‘a was taught for Laylat al-Qadr?
  5. Why does pardon not require concealing ongoing harm?
