Divine Names study

A clear first meaning

Al-Kabir is a revealed description of اللّٰه (ALLAH) commonly rendered The Great, The Grand or The Most Great. A precision transliteration is al-Kabīr, with a long vowel in the final syllable. “The Grand” can help English learners distinguish this study from Al-Azim, but it is still a translation choice rather than a replacement for the Arabic.

When the form describes اللّٰه (ALLAH), it affirms greatness and grandeur above every created claim to greatness. Created greatness is always measured within a field: a large building, major decision, older leader or serious event. It can begin, change and end. Al-Kabir does not place the Creator inside that comparison.

The page therefore does not teach “the biggest thing”. A thing has dimensions, boundaries and a place. The Creator is not like creation. Read the Name through its Qur’anic settings, especially its repeated pairing with Al-Aliyy.

What the controlled search found

The morphology-led corpus contains forty candidates for the selected lemma. Contextual review classifies six as Divine-referent uses and thirty-four as non-Divine uses. There are no unresolved records in this production check.

The six Divine locators are Qur’an 4:34, 13:9, 22:62, 31:30, 34:23 and 40:12. Five use the exact definite surface: 13:9, 22:62, 31:30, 34:23 and 40:12. Qur’an 4:34 is a clear Divine use in an indefinite grammatical form.

The corpus has eight definite surfaces overall, but three are non-Divine. At Qur’an 35:32 and 42:22, the form describes great bounty; at 85:11, it describes the great attainment. Definite grammar does not by itself establish a Divine Name.

The remaining non-Divine candidates describe sin, corruption, a day, reward, a chief, an old man, a large object, pride, bounty, punishment, dominion and other created matters. This wide use makes contextual classification essential. The basmalah does not contain the lemma, so the counting result is unchanged by the basmalah method.

Qur’an 13:9 describes اللّٰه (ALLAH) as Knower of the unseen and witnessed, then gives Al-Kabir followed by Al-Muta‘ali. The passage joins knowledge with grandeur and exaltation. No hidden fact competes with Him, and no created observer rises to the same level.

This is the only exact adjacent Al-Kabir-to-Al-Muta‘ali candidate in the current ledger, and the context is Divine. It offers a useful comparison: Al-Kabir directs attention to Divine greatness and grandeur; Al-Muta‘ali directs attention to being supremely exalted. The wording remains a concise teaching aid pending qualified Arabic review.

The current adjacency ledger finds Al-Aliyy immediately before Al-Kabir at Qur’an 4:34, 22:62, 31:30, 34:23 and 40:12. All five are Divine-context pairings. This repeated Qur’anic relationship is the strongest comparison route for the page.

Qur’an 34:23 explains that intercession benefits only where permission is given, then closes with Al-Aliyy and Al-Kabir. Created honour never becomes independent authority. Prophets and angels remain honoured servants; permission, truth and final authority belong to اللّٰه (ALLAH).

This protects two truths at once. Muslims love and honour the messengers, yet do not direct worship to them. A person who claims to sell guaranteed intercession or secret access contradicts the dependence visible in the verse.

Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allāh has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allāh would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance – [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them [lightly]. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allāh is ever Exalted and Grand.

Compare · M. Pickthall

Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all).

Open Qur’an 4:34 and the named translations on Quran.com

Qur’an 4:34 closes by describing اللّٰه (ALLAH) with Al-Aliyy and Al-Kabir in indefinite grammatical forms. The referent is still clear. This panel teaches an important counting distinction: “exact definite surface” and “Divine-referent use” are not the same category.

The verse concerns family responsibility and conflict, so it must not be reduced to a word-hunt. Any broader legal or pastoral teaching requires qualified scholarship, attention to the whole passage and protection from abuse. The closing Names cannot be used to enlarge a husband’s ego or excuse harm. Human authority remains accountable under the Most High and Grand.

Why ordinary uses remain in the audit

Qur’an uses the selected lemma for many non-Divine matters. It can describe a great sin, large debt, eldest brother, chief, very old man, major corruption, great reward or great attainment. These are not mistakes in the Qur’an. They show the range of ordinary language and expose mistakes in automated counting.

Even the definite form may describe something other than اللّٰه (ALLAH). The great bounty at Qur’an 35:32 and 42:22 and the great attainment at 85:11 are clear controls. A publisher who counts every highlighted definite form as the Divine Name would turn grammar into a false claim.

The responsible statement is exact and modest: forty lemma candidates, six Divine, thirty-four non-Divine; eight definite surfaces overall, five of them Divine. A qualified Arabic reviewer must still sign the final public wording.

Al-Kabir, Al-Azim and Al-Mutakabbir

Al-Kabir and Al-Azim can share English translations such as “the Great” or “the Most Great”, but they come from different Arabic roots and have distinct context maps. Al-Kabir belongs to the k-b-r family; Al-Azim belongs to ʿ-ẓ-m. Do not merge their occurrence totals or use one page’s evidence for the other.

Al-Mutakabbir is another revealed candidate with its own Arabic form and Qur’anic setting at 59:23. It should not be substituted for Al-Kabir, and Al-Akbar should not be presented as though it were the same catalogue entry. Similar English vocabulary does not erase morphology.

A learner-friendly distinction is that Al-Kabir brings Divine grandeur above all created greatness into view, while Al-Azim brings incomparable magnificence and tremendous greatness into view. That formulation is explanatory, not an exhaustive definition.

Meaning in translation

Saheeh International is the primary reading. The two named comparisons make translation choices visible; none is presented as the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Primary · Saheeh International

[He is] Creator of the heavens and the earth. He has made for you from yourselves, mates, and among the cattle, mates; He multiplies you thereby. There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

Compare · M. Pickthall

The Creator of the heavens and the earth. He hath made for you pairs of yourselves, and of the cattle also pairs, whereby He multiplieth you. Naught is as His likeness; and He is the Hearer, the Seer.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

(He is) the Creator of the heavens and the earth: He has made for you pairs from among yourselves, and pairs among cattle: by this means does He multiply you: there is nothing whatever like unto Him, and He is the One that hears and sees (all things).

Open Qur’an 42:11 and the named translations on Quran.com

Qur’an 42:11 states that nothing is like اللّٰه (ALLAH). Do not imagine Al-Kabir as a giant, planet, light, king on a throne or enlarged human ruler. Every such picture belongs to creation. The Qur’an permits confident affirmation without visual invention.

Design can support reverent reading through proportion, calm movement and clear source panels, but it cannot depict the Divine reality. Gold, cosmic scenery and scale are created visual languages. They must remain subordinate and must never be labelled as a representation of اللّٰه (ALLAH).

What this changes in ordinary life

Al-Kabir corrects pride. A person may possess real ability, influence or achievement, but none was self-created. Health, time, teachers, opportunities and the next heartbeat remain gifts. Gratitude does not erase effort; it places effort in truthful dependence.

The Name also corrects fear of people. Powerful institutions and leaders can affect life, and believers should take wise precautions. Yet no created power is final, independent or outside judgement. Courage means acting truthfully with lawful means, not pretending that danger is unreal.

When worship feels small, remember that value is not measured only by public visibility. A sincere private prayer, honest repayment or quiet refusal of wrongdoing is known by اللّٰه (ALLAH). Do not chase attention to make an act seem great.

When teaching, avoid slogans such as “say this Name and every major problem will disappear”. The page has no evidence for such a guarantee. Teach the Name, use established du‘a, take responsible action and leave outcomes to Divine wisdom.

Pronunciation and careful language

In al-Kabīr, the long ī should be heard from a qualified Arabic speaker. The initial k is not difficult for most English learners, but speed can shorten the vowel or blur the ending. Let the learner repeat without turning pronunciation practice into public judgement.

“Grand” can sound like a style of building; “great” can sound casual; “Most Great” can sound awkward in English. Each translation needs context. Display named translations side by side and explain that no English phrase becomes the Arabic Name itself.

Learn it at your level

First encounter

Al-Kabir teaches that اللّٰه (ALLAH) is truly Great and Grand. Every created thing called great is limited and depends on Him.

Ages 5–7 with an adult

Name something large, old and important. Ask how each could change. Explain that created greatness never becomes Divine greatness.

Ages 8–11

Read Qur’an 22:62. Identify what is true, what is false and which two Names close the verse.

Ages 12–15

Sort forty candidates into six Divine and thirty-four non-Divine uses. Then explain why only five of eight definite surfaces are Divine.

Ages 16+ and adults

Compare all five Al-Aliyy–Al-Kabir pairings. State the topic of each surrounding passage without forcing them into one summary.

Adult and teacher guide

Begin by asking learners to define “great” in three settings: a person, event and physical object. Show how the English meaning changes. Then read Qur’an 13:9 and identify the actual Qur’anic pairing rather than starting from a dictionary.

Give older learners eight definite-surface references and ask them to classify the referent. Five describe اللّٰه (ALLAH); three describe bounty or attainment. This demonstrates that an Arabic article is a grammar feature, not a theological stamp.

When teaching Qur’an 4:34, do not improvise legal rulings or use the closing Names to support control and harm. State the narrow purpose of the panel—an indefinite Divine form—and refer legal, marital or safeguarding questions to qualified support.

For retrieval, ask after one day for the 40/6/34 classification and after seven days for the 8/5 definite-surface distinction, one textual pairing and one ethical response. Reward transparent uncertainty over confident invention.

What the source data establishes

This research panel separates an exact Arabic lemma, its use in a passage, an English translator’s wording, and a claim that the wording functions there as a Divine Name. Those are related questions, but they are not the same count.

Saheeh International

Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allāh has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allāh would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance – [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them [lightly]. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allāh is ever Exalted and Grand.

Saheeh International

That is because Allāh is the True Reality, and that which they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because Allāh is the Most High, the Grand.

M. Pickthall

That is because Allah, He is the True, and that whereon they call instead of Him, it is the false, and because Allah, He is the High, the Great.

A. Yusuf Ali

That is because Allah – He is the Reality; and those besides Him whom they invoke,- they are but vain Falsehood: verily Allah is He, Most High, Most Great.
