The Perfectly Good and Pure

At-Tayyib is carefully explained as The Perfectly Good and Pure. Sahih Muslim 1015 states that اللّٰه (ALLAH) is tayyib and accepts only what is tayyib. The Divine predicate in the source is indefinite. The conventional article-bearing page label must not be reported as the exact surface.

The hadith links this teaching to lawful earning, food, drink, clothing and supplication. “Pure” must therefore not be reduced to sterile, expensive, fashionable or culturally familiar. “Good” must not be reduced to pleasant taste. Tayyib in this context joins goodness, purity, lawfulness and acceptance under revelation.

Meaning in English

This is a source-bound editorial paraphrase for understanding. It is not the Arabic report and is not presented as a verbatim translation.

Editorial paraphrase

Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) taught that اللّٰه (ALLAH) is Tayyib and accepts only what is tayyib, before connecting the teaching to lawful food, deeds, charity and supplication.

Evidence use

Tayyib is an indefinite Divine predicate. The same root is used of created food, earnings and other good things in the report, so those uses must not be counted as extra title occurrences or treated as equal modes of meaning.

Sahih Muslim 1015 is narrated by Abu Huraira, may اللّٰه (ALLAH) be pleased with him, in the chapter concerning charity from good earnings. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) states the tayyib predicate and that اللّٰه (ALLAH) accepts only what is tayyib.

The report then cites Qur’an 23:51 and 2:172 before describing a traveller who raises his hands in supplication while his food, drink, clothing and nourishment come from unlawful sources. The question at the end challenges confidence in acceptance under those conditions.

This is a warning, not a warrant to diagnose another person. A delayed or unanswered request does not prove hidden unlawful income. Outcomes remain unseen, and sincere people experience long tests.

The simple first meaning

For a first-time learner: اللّٰه (ALLAH) is perfectly good and pure and accepts what is good, pure and lawful. We should care how money is earned, how food is obtained and whether an act of worship is sincere and permitted.

Pronunciation guide: at-Tay-yib is a useful approximation. The central consonant is doubled. Listen to a qualified Arabic reader and avoid flattening the word into an English phrase that means only tasty or clean.

Divine purity is not created cleanliness. اللّٰه (ALLAH) is free of every imperfection in a manner worthy of Him. Human cleanliness, lawful consumption and good deeds are created responsibilities and never become equal to a Divine attribute.

Qur’an 23:51 addresses the messengers: eat from the good things and do righteous deeds. Sahih Muslim 1015 cites this verse directly. Provision and action are joined; consumption is not isolated from conduct.

The verse’s tayyib expression describes created provisions. It is not an At-Tayyib title occurrence. A teacher must keep the grammatical referent visible rather than counting every similar root form as a Name.

Lawful food does not have to be luxurious. Simple food can be tayyib, and expensive branding cannot make unlawful income acceptable. Medical dietary needs must be respected rather than dismissed as lack of gratitude.

Qur’an 2:172 addresses believers with permission to eat from good things provided and commands gratitude if they truly worship Him. The hadith also cites this verse. The panel joins provision, gratitude and exclusive worship.

Again, the tayyib form describes provision, not اللّٰه (ALLAH). It must not be listed as a Divine-title occurrence. The verse also does not allow a person to declare ingredients lawful by preference alone; practical rulings need reliable evidence and competent advice.

Qur’an 7:58 contrasts good land that brings forth vegetation by its Lord’s permission with poor land that produces only with difficulty. The panel supplies a created contrast and uses related vocabulary, but it is not a Divine title occurrence.

The verse should not be applied to label human beings as “bad soil.” Its stated comparison concerns land and signs. Any broader teaching should remain under named tafsir review.

What the evidence boundary establishes

Sahih Muslim 1015 gives an indefinite Divine predicate. At-Tayyib is retained as the catalogue label for learners and navigation. The page does not alter the source grammar to match the label.

Qur’an 23:51 and 2:172 are explicitly cited inside the hadith and concern good provisions and righteous action. Qur’an 7:58 concerns good land. None contains At-Tayyib as a title. No Qur’anic occurrence total, root count or Basmalah adjustment is claimed.

The source also guards against a narrow ritual reading. Supplication, earning, consumption, clothing and social responsibility appear in one moral field.

At-Tayyib and nearby Names

At-Tayyib and Al-Quddus: both can be translated with purity language, but their roots, source records and implications differ.

At-Tayyib and Ar-Razzaq: provision comes from اللّٰه (ALLAH), while servants remain accountable for lawful earning and use.

At-Tayyib and Al-Ghani: اللّٰه (ALLAH) needs nothing from charity. The giver needs acceptance and purification.

At-Tayyib and Ash-Shakur: gratitude for provision includes lawful use, not words alone.

At-Tayyib and Al-Adl: income cannot be called good while it depends on fraud, exploitation or stolen rights.

Auditing income without pretending to be a judge

Ask what work is being paid for, whether the product is lawful, whether contracts are honest and whether another person’s rights are being taken. Complex employment, pensions, taxation and financial products may require qualified legal and scholarly advice.

Do not announce that every worker in a disputed industry has identical responsibility. Roles, knowledge and ability to change differ. Provide a safe route to ask questions, protect confidentiality and support lawful transition where needed.

An employer should also examine wages, safety and truthful advertising. A technically lawful product can still be sold through deception. Repentance may require returning rights, correcting records or compensating harm.

Living with the teaching

Check the source of income. Ask informed questions before signing or promoting.

Read labels responsibly. Consider allergies, dietary rules and trustworthy certification without obsessive suspicion.

Give from lawful earnings. Charity does not cleanse money that must be returned to its owner.

Practise gratitude. Avoid waste, share food and acknowledge those who produced it.

Protect dignity. Offer food assistance privately and without humiliating conditions.

Make du‘a with reform. Ask sincerely while correcting known wrongdoing and returning rights.

Errors this page rejects

At-Tayyib does not mean that a favourite cuisine, organic label or luxury brand is spiritually superior. Cultural unfamiliarity does not make food impure. Nor may a person declare something lawful merely because it feels wholesome.

The page rejects telling a distressed person that an unanswered prayer proves secret sin. The hadith warns about a serious obstacle; it does not give observers access to a person’s unseen account or the reason for every outcome.

It also rejects obsessive checking that makes ordinary life impossible. Where reliable evidence establishes permissibility, a learner should not be trapped by endless imagined contamination. Seek qualified help for severe scrupulosity.

Charity and rights

Giving money away does not erase ownership claims. If wealth was stolen, withheld from an employee or obtained by fraud, returning the right comes before presenting the amount as generous charity. Keep records and seek advice where the owner cannot be found.

A charity should check donors and funding risks proportionately without public accusation. It should describe how funds are used, avoid misleading “one hundred percent” claims and protect beneficiary dignity.

For children, teach the difference between sharing a lawful possession and giving away something entrusted by another person. Good intention does not make misuse of an amanah acceptable.

A worked study method

  1. Read Sahih Muslim 1015: identify the indefinite predicate and acceptance statement.
  2. Trace the citations: locate Qur’an 23:51 and 2:172 inside the report.
  3. Classify the vocabulary: provisions and land are created referents, not title occurrences.
  4. Protect against accusation: distinguish a general warning from diagnosing one person’s unanswered prayer.
  5. Apply: audit one purchase, one income claim or one charity process.

Building a lawful decision habit

Before purchasing or accepting income, identify the item, contract and source of doubt. Separate a known prohibition from a rumour. Check reliable evidence and ask a qualified person when the facts or ruling are complex. Record the answer so the same uncertainty does not restart every day.

If a mistake is discovered, do not hide behind good intention. Stop the wrong where possible, calculate affected rights, seek forgiveness and make repair. Equally, do not invent an impossible standard after sincere correction. Repentance should produce action and hope.

Organisations can make this easier by publishing transparent prices, refund terms, safeguarding routes and donation reports. A polished charity appeal is not tayyib if it hides fees or exaggerates impact. Good governance protects both donor and beneficiary.

For young people, teach a simple three-question habit: Is it mine to give? Is the way I obtained it lawful? Will giving or using it harm someone’s right? These questions connect daily choices to the hadith without burdening children with adult financial detail.

Ages 5–7 with an adult

Practise washing hands, thanking for food and asking before sharing what belongs to someone else.

Ages 8–11

Sort fictional examples into lawful possession, entrusted item, waste and generous sharing.

Ages 12–15

Trace the two verses cited in the hadith and explain why they are not Name occurrences.

Ages 16+ and adults

Complete an ethical earning and charity check without accusing individuals.

Adult and teacher guide

Begin with the complete controlled hadith panel. Ask learners to mark Divine predicate, cited verses, traveller context and unlawful nourishment. Do not manually reproduce Arabic or detach the opening statement from the economic warning.

Use fictional money cases rather than asking children about household income. Include wages, found property, an entrusted item and misleading sales. Discuss who owns the right and what repair looks like.

Food lessons must account for allergies, disability, poverty and cultural diversity. Never pressure a learner to taste food or disclose religious and medical details publicly.

When discussing du‘a, state that known wrongdoing should be corrected while hidden reasons remain unknown. Avoid formulas such as “your prayer failed because your food was unlawful.”

Reassess after a week: report locator, predicate class, two hadith-cited panels, land panel, one ethical income question and one safeguarding rule.
