Divine Books and final authority · lesson four
Respect for earlier revelation and loyalty to the Qur’an are not opposites. The Qur’an teaches both. It also identifies particular forms of distortion without giving readers permission to make sweeping claims about every line, manuscript or person.

O you who have believed, believe in Allāh and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down upon His Messenger and the Scripture which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allāh, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day has certainly gone far astray.
O ye who believe! Believe in Allah and His messenger and the Scripture which He hath revealed unto His messenger, and the Scripture which He revealed aforetime. Whoso disbelieveth in Allah and His angels and His scriptures and His messengers and the Last Day, he verily hath wandered far astray.
O ye who believe! Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and the scripture which He hath sent to His Messenger and the scripture which He sent to those before (him). Any who denieth Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Day of Judgment, hath gone far, far astray.

Qur’an 4:136 commands belief in اللّٰه (ALLAH), His messenger, the Book sent down to him and the books sent down before. A Muslim therefore cannot speak of the original revelations with contempt. They came from the same Creator who revealed the Qur’an. Respect means affirming their Divine origin as the Qur’an presents it, honouring the messengers who received revelation and refusing jokes or images that belittle sacred teaching. It does not mean treating present canons, translations and interpretations as equal authorities for Muslim belief.
Learning move: Write two linked statements from Qur’an 4:136: Muslims believe in the Book sent to the messenger and in books sent before. Add a third statement explaining that honouring original revelation does not make every later interpretation binding. Read the three lines together so respect appears as a positive belief rather than a reluctant concession.

Qur’an 2:79 condemns people who wrote a text with their own hands and then claimed it was from اللّٰه (ALLAH) for a small gain. Qur’an 3:78 speaks of a group twisting their tongues with the Book so listeners would think something belonged to the Book when it did not. These are serious warnings about falsely attributing words to the Creator. Notice the precision: the verses describe conduct by specified people or a group. They do not state in these lines that every word in every present document is false.
Learning move: For Qur’an 2:79 and 3:78, underline the actor and the condemned action in each translation. Compare that precision with the sweeping statement “everyone changed everything.” Explain why the sweeping sentence is not licensed by these panels. Accurate criticism names the conduct without turning it into collective guilt or a total textual verdict.

And We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him)], the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allāh has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method. Had Allāh willed, He would have made you one nation [united in religion], but [He intended] to test you in what He has given you; so race to [all that is] good. To Allāh is your return all together, and He will [then] inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.
The salutation is an editorial addition; the stored translation is unchanged. And unto thee have We revealed the Scripture with the truth, confirming whatever Scripture was before it, and a watcher over it. So judge between them by that which Allah hath revealed, and follow not their desires away from the truth which hath come unto thee. For each We have appointed a divine law and a traced-out way. Had Allah willed He could have made you one community. But that He may try you by that which He hath given you (He hath made you as ye are). So vie one with another in good works. Unto Allah ye will all return, and He will then inform you of that wherein ye differ.
To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so judge between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that hath come to thee. To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way. If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah; it is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute;

Qur’an 5:48 does not leave the reader without a standard. It presents the Qur’an as sent down in truth, confirming earlier scripture and standing as authority over it. Therefore, Muslims do not require a blanket theory about every manuscript before knowing what to follow. The Qur’an is the criterion. What it confirms is affirmed; what contradicts it is not accepted against it; and what it leaves unstated is not promoted to revealed certainty by this course.
Learning move: Return to Qur’an 5:48 and make a three-way decision guide: confirmed by the Qur’an, contradicted by it, or not settled here. Add one example using neutral placeholders rather than an external quotation. The exercise should show that Muslims already have a criterion and do not need an unsupported universal theory before following revelation.

And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."

Inspect Qur’an 29:46 and the named translations on Quran.com
Qur’an 29:46 instructs believers to engage the People of the Book in the best manner except where there is wrongdoing, and to affirm the one God and the revelation sent to both communities. A respectful explanation begins with shared origin and then states the authority difference plainly. Do not insult another learner, mock a sacred name or generalise the misconduct of a group to every individual. Equally, do not hide Muslim belief because disagreement feels uncomfortable. Clarity can be calm.
Learning move: Rehearse a conversation using Qur’an 29:46. Open with shared belief in one Creator and original revelation, then explain the Qur’an’s authority. Ask whether your tone is excellent and whether your meaning is still clear. Remove mockery and blame, but do not replace a genuine difference with the claim that all teachings are equally authoritative.
Answer common questions without overclaiming
If asked about later collections associated with earlier revelation, clarify the terms. Muslims believe in the original revelations named by the Qur’an: the Tawrah, Zabur and Injil, among others. This short lesson does not adjudicate the textual history of later collections. If asked whether every later line is altered, say that the Qur’an records acts of writing and verbal distortion while this course does not issue a line-by-line verdict. Then return to 5:48: the Qur’an governs belief.
Learning move: Prepare answers to two common questions using only Qur’anic terms: what Muslims affirm about the original books, and what they follow now. If asked for a detailed history of a particular later collection, state that this lesson does not adjudicate it and refer the question. A careful referral is stronger than a confident guess.
Guide adults, children and interfaith learners safely
For ages 5–7, teach “The Creator sent guidance before and sent the Qur’an for us to follow.” For ages 8–11, match each named book to its controlled verse. For teenagers, compare the precise wording of 2:79 and 3:78 with the broad claim “everything is false” and explain why the latter goes beyond those verses. Adults should practise a two-minute respectful answer that includes 4:136, 5:48 and 29:46. No learner should be pressured to attack family members, disclose private conflict or perform a hostile debate.
Learning move: Adapt the lesson by age. Young children match named books to verse keys; older children state one source boundary; teenagers compare precise and sweeping claims; adults practise the two-sentence respectful answer. No learner should be asked to attack relatives, disclose family conflict or perform a hostile debate as proof of mastery.
Adult companion · lesson · TC-LESSON-076 Divine Books and final authority · lesson four Your role is to slow the learning down, keep the exact evidence visible and make it safe for the learner to say, “I am not sure yet.” Open the named ayah or hadith before explaining it. Tell the learner whether they are seeing Arabic revelation, a reading aid, a named translation, a hadith translation or editorial teaching. Ask one precise question and wait. If the learner struggles, point to the relevant line, narrow the choice or replay the audio before supplying the answer. Praise honest checking and careful effort. Correct the idea or sound without labelling the learner, and never turn a mistake into embarrassment. Opening words: “We are going to learn one idea carefully and see exactly where it comes from. We can pause, replay and check the source whenever we need to.” Teach one short source phrase and one meaning. Use text cards, colour bands, paths or simple geometric symbols—never a picture of اللّٰه (ALLAH) and never an image that implies His form. Let the child point, match, listen and repeat once or twice. Use two or three evidence cards and ask the learner to match each idea to its locator. Invite a short explanation in their own words, then reopen the source to correct it together. Compare the named English translations where provided. Ask what wording differs, what remains constant, and why a translation must not be called the Arabic Qur’an itself. Require a precise claim, an exact source locator and a stated boundary. Invite the learner to distinguish established meaning from inference and to mark any unresolved question for qualified review. Gentle correction: “Let us listen once more and notice where the sound begins,” protects both accuracy and confidence. Complete one task independently before adding another.
