A Sustainable First-Year Learning Plan
A new Muslim can be given too little help or far too much information. A sound first year begins with the truth of tawheed, establishes obligatory worship with competent support, makes room for Qur’an and questions, and grows through steady practice. The twelve-month structure below is an editorial learning plan, not a sacred timetable and not a replacement for a qualified teacher.
You do not need to become an encyclopedia before you can worship. You do need reliable priorities. Urgent practical questions—especially prayer, purification, safety, family conflict, health and legal responsibilities—should be answered promptly by a trustworthy person who knows the subject and your circumstances.
What you should be able to do
- Distinguish essential foundations from useful later enrichment.
- Build a repeatable weekly learning routine.
- Use ability without turning it into an excuse for abandonment.
- Record questions and verify answers.
- Respond to a difficult week by restarting, not disappearing.
1. Put worship at the centre

Indeed, I am Allāh. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.

Qur’an 20:14 joins recognition of the One worthy of worship with establishing prayer for His remembrance. That makes prayer a first-year priority. It does not mean a beginner must learn every secondary detail alone before praying. It means the learner needs prompt, kind and competent practical support.
Keep tawheed visible throughout the year. Each practice answers a central question: for whom is this done? Prayer, supplication, fasting, charity and pilgrimage are not lifestyle badges. They are worship directed to اللّٰه (ALLAH).
2. Work within ability without deleting responsibility

It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. These ayahs give an ability-aware frame. They do not tell a learner to punish themselves with an impossible programme. They also do not make “I am busy” a universal cancellation of duty. The practical response is to identify what is obligatory, learn the relevant concessions from a qualified source, and build habits that can survive ordinary life.
If disability, illness, pregnancy, trauma, unsafe family circumstances or demanding work changes what is possible, do not guess the ruling from a generic page. Record the exact situation and seek appropriate guidance. A compassionate plan makes that referral easy rather than treating it as failure.
3. Choose steady deeds

Months 1–3 · establish foundations
Review the testimony of faith, exclusive worship, repentance and the five pillars. Begin learning prayer and purification with a trustworthy teacher immediately. Read a small portion of Qur’an in Arabic where possible and in a named translation you understand. Build a question list instead of consuming disconnected clips.
Months 4–6 · make the routine stable
Protect the five daily prayers, continue Qur’an, and learn short authentic remembrances connected to daily life. Study the meaning of Surah al-Fatihah and the short surahs you use. If you have missed days, repair the routine with help; do not turn one interruption into a decision to quit.
Months 7–9 · widen understanding
Study the articles of faith, the prophetic message, character and family duties. Learn the basic conditions relevant to fasting, zakah or pilgrimage when they apply to you. Keep detailed calculations and exceptional circumstances with qualified instruction.
Months 10–12 · consolidate and review
Return to your first notes. Can you explain tawheed with evidence? Can you find the prayer and purification sources you use? Which questions remain unresolved? Choose the next structured course from evidence rather than novelty.
5. Build one workable week

Ask people of knowledge when you do not know, and do not pursue what you have no knowledge of. Before accepting an answer, record who gave it, what evidence was cited, whether it addresses your actual circumstances and whether a recognised difference of opinion was disclosed. Popularity and confidence are not source fields.
Your first year is not a performance for other people. It is the beginning of worship, learning and return. A plan succeeds when it keeps you connected to the Creator, teaches obligations faithfully and makes the next truthful step clear.
Adult companion · lesson · TC-LESSON-025 A humane first-year route centred on tawheed, obligatory prayer, Qur’an, sound learning, repentance and steady practice rather than overload. Your role is to slow the learning down, keep the exact evidence visible and make it safe for the learner to say, “I am not sure yet.” Open the named ayah or hadith before explaining it. Tell the learner whether they are seeing Arabic revelation, a reading aid, a named translation, a hadith translation or editorial teaching. Ask one precise question and wait. If the learner struggles, point to the relevant line, narrow the choice or replay the audio before supplying the answer. Praise honest checking and careful effort. Correct the idea or sound without labelling the learner, and never turn a mistake into embarrassment. Opening words: “We are going to learn one idea carefully and see exactly where it comes from. We can pause, replay and check the source whenever we need to.” Teach one short source phrase and one meaning. Use text cards, colour bands, paths or simple geometric symbols—never a picture of اللّٰه (ALLAH) and never an image that implies His form. Let the child point, match, listen and repeat once or twice. Use two or three evidence cards and ask the learner to match each idea to its locator. Invite a short explanation in their own words, then reopen the source to correct it together. Compare the named English translations where provided. Ask what wording differs, what remains constant, and why a translation must not be called the Arabic Qur’an itself. Require a precise claim, an exact source locator and a stated boundary. Invite the learner to distinguish established meaning from inference and to mark any unresolved question for qualified review. Gentle correction: “Let us listen once more and notice where the sound begins,” protects both accuracy and confidence. Complete one task independently before adding another.
