The Six Articles of Faith · lesson four

Belief in Divine decree affirms that nothing escapes the knowledge, will, creation and measure of اللّٰه (ALLAH). Revelation also addresses people as responsible learners who choose, act, repent and seek help. This lesson preserves both truths without pretending to explain the unseen mechanism that joins them.

Qur’an 54:49 states that everything is created according to *qadar*. Named translations may use “measure”, “decree”, “destiny” or “preordination”, and each English choice needs its label because no one word carries every shade of the Arabic. The controlling point is that creation is not random, independent or outside the rule of اللّٰه (ALLAH).

The verse does not hand the learner a complete philosophical diagram. This course will not claim to know how Divine knowledge and will operate in a manner comparable to created planning. It also will not turn an English slogan into a solution for every painful question. Reverence includes knowing where revelation has not disclosed a mechanism.

Learning move: Compare the named English renderings of qadar in Qur’an 54:49. Preserve the labels and state the shared controlling claim without pretending one gloss exhausts the Arabic.

Qur’an 57:22 states that calamity on earth or within people is recorded before it is brought into being. The adjacent verse gives a practical orientation: do not be consumed by what has escaped you or become boastful over what has been given. Reading the pair protects the first verse from becoming a cold sentence thrown at someone in pain.

Normal grief is not forbidden. A person may mourn, seek justice, receive treatment and ask others for help. Belief in decree does not prove that a sufferer caused their hardship through weak faith, nor does it excuse an abuser. Adults should listen before explaining and should never use doctrine to block medical, legal, financial or safeguarding support.

Learning move: Read Qur’an 57:22 together with 57:23, then rewrite a cold slogan into a response that affirms decree while allowing grief, practical help and accountability.

Qur’an 76:3 states that the way is shown and describes grateful or ungrateful response. Qur’an 18:29 presents the truth from the Lord and addresses belief and disbelief together with consequence. Human choices are therefore morally meaningful. Commands, prohibitions, repentance and judgement are not empty performances.

This does not make a human being independent of اللّٰه (ALLAH). The safe conclusion is narrower: revelation affirms Divine decree and addresses human responsibility, so the learner affirms both. The course rejects fatalism—“nothing I do matters”—and absolute autonomy—“my will exists outside the Creator’s rule”. It does not invent a third theory and call it revealed fact.

Learning move: Put Qur’an 76:3 and 18:29 beside the decree panel. Explain how revelation addresses meaningful response without making the human will independent of the Creator.

Sahih Muslim 2664 records Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) teaching believers to pursue what benefits, seek help from اللّٰه (ALLAH) and not surrender to helplessness. The controlled panel holds action and reliance together. Study, treatment, safety planning, lawful work and repairing harm can all be part of a responsible response.

Effort is not a technique for forcing a preferred outcome. A learner may prepare carefully and still face disappointment. After an event, the hadith disciplines corrosive counterfactual regret; it does not forbid honest review, repentance, learning from preventable mistakes or seeking accountability. “Decree” must never be used to hide negligence or silence someone who was harmed.

Learning move: Turn Sahih Muslim 2664 into a three-step action card: pursue benefit, seek help from the Creator and refuse helplessness. Add that effort does not control the result.

Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."

Compare · M. Pickthall

Allah tasketh not a soul beyond its scope. For it (is only) that which it hath earned, and against it (only) that which it hath deserved. Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget, or miss the mark! Our Lord! Lay not on us such a burden as thou didst lay on those before us! Our Lord! Impose not on us that which we have not the strength to bear! Pardon us, absolve us and have mercy on us, Thou, our Protector, and give us victory over the disbelieving folk.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

On no soul doth Allah Place a burden greater than it can bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that it earns. (Pray:) "Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; our Lord! Lay not on us a burden Like that which Thou didst lay on those before us; Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins, and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector; Help us against those who stand against faith."

Qur’an 2:286 teaches that a soul has what it earns and bears what it acquires, then gives a supplication for pardon, forgiveness, mercy and help. The verse joins accountability to dependence and mercy. It should not be detached from its prayerful ending and used as a simplistic judgement about trauma, disability, coercion or mental illness.

A general lesson cannot decide a person’s legal capacity, culpability or excuse. Those questions may require qualified scholarship and relevant professional knowledge. The practical learner response is to do what is genuinely within reach, seek help for what is not, correct harm where possible and avoid judging circumstances they do not know.

Learning move: Read Qur’an 2:286 through its prayer for pardon, mercy and help. Identify why the verse cannot be used to diagnose culpability in trauma, coercion or disability.

Build a decree-and-action plan without fatalism

Choose one present concern and divide the page into three columns. “My responsibility” contains lawful actions such as asking advice, preparing, apologising or attending an appointment. “Outside my control” contains outcomes, other people’s hidden choices and the unseen future. “My worshipful response” contains reliance, patience, supplication and repentance without an invented formula or guaranteed result.

For children, use an ordinary example such as preparing for a test: revise, ask for help, pray and accept that the result cannot be controlled completely. Do not use bereavement, abuse or serious illness as a classroom scenario. Older learners can test a statement for fatalism, absolute autonomy, victim-blaming or source-based balance.

Learning move: Complete the responsibility-control-worship plan with an ordinary concern. Remove confidential details and route urgent medical or safeguarding needs to the proper service.

Arabic, word alignment, transliteration and named translations are supplied through the separately labelled Quran Foundation panels.
Hadith evidence
Controlled authenticated record: muslim:2664. The collection and reference are preserved; a named displayed grading is not silently changed into a universal claim.
Teaching explanation
Explanatory prose, examples, diagrams and adult teaching advice are Tawheed Club editorial material. They are never presented as Qur’an, translation, tafsir or words of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him).
Release control
This item must pass source, meaning, language, editorial and release checks. Corrections remain welcome when supported by an exact source locator.

Help a learner master Divine Decree and a Coherent Life of Faith

The Six Articles of Faith · lesson four Your role is to slow the learning down, keep the exact evidence visible and make it safe for the learner to say, “I am not sure yet.”

Begin with the source

Open the named ayah or hadith before explaining it. Tell the learner whether they are seeing Arabic revelation, a reading aid, a named translation, a hadith translation or editorial teaching.

Invite an answer before helping

Ask one precise question and wait. If the learner struggles, point to the relevant line, narrow the choice or replay the audio before supplying the answer.

Correct with dignity

Praise honest checking and careful effort. Correct the idea or sound without labelling the learner, and never turn a mistake into embarrassment.

01Prepare a focused session
  1. Read Divine Decree and a Coherent Life of Faith yourself and open every cited source before inviting the learner.
  2. Choose one realistic aim from the mastery statement. Do not try to teach the whole page in one sitting.
  3. Test any Arabic audio. If a sound is outside your confidence, plan to listen together and seek correction from a capable teacher.
  4. Remove distractions and decide when to stop: about 8–10 minutes for a younger child, 15–20 minutes for ages 8–11, or 20–30 minutes for an older learner.
  5. Keep paper optional. If Qur’anic text is printed, follow the respect and waste guidance shown above the ayah panel.

Opening words: “We are going to learn one idea carefully and see exactly where it comes from. We can pause, replay and check the source whenever we need to.”

02Use a source-led teaching conversation
  1. Connect: Ask what the learner already thinks the title means. Record the answer without immediately judging it.
  2. Read or listen: Open the first evidence panel or cited report. Hear the complete Arabic before isolating one word or phrase.
  3. Notice: Ask the learner to identify the exact words that support the first teaching point. A contextual word gloss is a clue; the complete named translation supplies the sentence meaning.
  4. Explain: Read the teaching paragraph. Ask, “Which part came directly from the source, and which part is the writer helping us understand?”
  5. Apply: Choose one practice task. Keep everyday examples within the boundary of the source; do not invent promises, hidden causes or rulings.
  6. Retrieve: Close the explanation and ask the learner to state the idea, evidence locator and one careful application in their own words.
03Questions for this exact resource
  • “What does Creation is according to decree and measure mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 54:49)?”
  • “What does Recorded calamity is taught beside a moral purpose mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 57:22)?”
  • “Which sentence is revelation or hadith, and which sentence is explanation?”
  • “What would be an overstatement that the cited source does not allow us to make?”
04Adapt the same truth for different ages

Ages 5–7

Teach one short source phrase and one meaning. Use text cards, colour bands, paths or simple geometric symbols—never a picture of اللّٰه (ALLAH) and never an image that implies His form. Let the child point, match, listen and repeat once or twice.

Ages 8–11

Use two or three evidence cards and ask the learner to match each idea to its locator. Invite a short explanation in their own words, then reopen the source to correct it together.

Ages 12–15

Compare the named English translations where provided. Ask what wording differs, what remains constant, and why a translation must not be called the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Ages 16+ and adults

Require a precise claim, an exact source locator and a stated boundary. Invite the learner to distinguish established meaning from inference and to mark any unresolved question for qualified review.

05Support Arabic without creating false confidence
  1. Listen to the whole ayah or supplication first.
  2. Follow the Arabic from right to left and use the word-level controls only after hearing the complete wording.
  3. Treat transliteration as temporary scaffolding. It cannot reproduce every Arabic sound.
  4. Let the learner echo a short unit, then return it to the full phrase so meaning and pronunciation remain connected.
  5. If neither of you can hear or form a sound confidently, record it for a capable Qur’an or Arabic teacher. Do not manufacture an English substitute and call it exact.

Gentle correction: “Let us listen once more and notice where the sound begins,” protects both accuracy and confidence.

06Choose one useful follow-up
  • Study every controlled evidence panel in context.
  • Complete the consolidation prompt and use saved progress to resume precisely.

Complete one task independently before adding another. Adult support should reveal the route, not hide whether the learner can use it.

07Revisit for durable mastery

After 24 hours · five minutes

  1. Ask for the central idea without showing the answer.
  2. Ask the learner to find its source locator.
  3. Replay one Arabic phrase and reconnect it to the complete meaning.
  4. Correct by reopening the source, then end with one successful retrieval.

After seven days · eight minutes

  1. Ask for the idea, source and boundary in the learner’s own words.
  2. Retry the most difficult mastery question.
  3. Apply the idea to one new but appropriate situation.
  4. Record what is secure and what needs another supported attempt.
