1. Begin with the authentic reports

Sahih al-Bukhari 5950 reports the severe warning concerning picture-makers. Sahih al-Bukhari 5954 records that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) objected to a curtain bearing images and connected the warning to trying to imitate creation. Sahih Muslim 2110a includes Ibn Abbas’s direction to make trees and things without souls if the person had to continue making pictures.

Each gold Qur’an panel uses the locked Uthmani Arabic catalogue and separately named English translations. Do not soften these reports into “Islam has no concern about images”. Do not expand them into a verdict on every pixel without explaining the juristic reasoning. The faithful starting point is the complete evidence and the actual object under discussion.

Teach children never to enter a real name, face, voice, school, address, location, medical detail or private conversation into an AI tool. Keep adult-controlled accounts and privacy settings, supervise generated content, explain that convincing output can be wrong, and provide a simple route for reporting anything frightening, sexual, hateful, manipulative or secretive.

2. Define the medium before asking for a ruling

Qur’an 17:36 forbids following what one lacks knowledge of. A serious question cannot use “picture” as though a carved idol, passport photograph, live video, children’s animation, medical scan and generated photorealistic deepfake were technically identical.

Record whether the work is three-dimensional or flat, captured or drawn, still or moving, complete or partial, temporary or stored, animate or non-animate, realistic or stylised, and produced directly by a person or through a generative model. Then record purpose, audience, display, privacy and potential veneration or deception.

AI image generation is not simply pressing a camera shutter. A model produces a new output from learned statistical relationships in data, guided by a prompt and system settings. That difference does not by itself declare the output lawful or unlawful; it tells the scholar what process actually occurred.

Editing also matters. Removing a background, fabricating a face, changing modest clothing, impersonating a real person and generating a fictional landscape are different acts with different rights and harms.

3. Recognised contemporary applications differ

Qur’an 16:43 tells those who do not know to ask people of knowledge. For a modern medium, consult someone grounded in the authentic texts and capable of understanding what the technology does.

Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta: photography and drawing humans states an official permissive application for photography and drawings, including animate subjects, subject to moral content, and explicitly characterises the matter as disputed. It cites earlier juristic discussion rather than claiming there was never a prohibition.

Shaykh Ibn Baz: ruling on photographing animate beings gives a stricter application, including photography of animate beings within the prohibition while recognising necessity such as identity documents. Presenting only one of these as though the other does not exist would misstate the contemporary record.

A learner may follow qualified scholarship, but should not turn that choice into abuse of other Muslims. Ask the scholar to identify the source texts, the category of the medium, the role of necessity or need and whether content, display or purpose changes the answer.

4. Content and rights create separate questions

Qur’an 24:19 warns those who love that indecency should spread among believers. Even a medium considered permissible in principle cannot make sexual exploitation, humiliation, fabricated nudity or circulation of intimate material acceptable.

Qur’an 5:8 commands steadfast justice and forbids hatred from causing injustice. Do not generate propaganda, dehumanising caricatures or false scenes to injure someone because you oppose them.

Obtain consent before cloning a face or voice, especially for a child. Do not fabricate evidence, sexualise a person, remove modest clothing, recreate private trauma or imply endorsement. Likeness, copyright, defamation and data-protection rules may apply independently of the fiqh classification of image-making.

A “parody” label does not repair every harm. Ask whether a reasonable viewer could be deceived, whether the subject is exposed to danger or shame, and whether the work can be shared outside its original context.

Digital-safety boundary: never upload passwords, private messages, confidential school or work files, intimate images, health records, children’s identifiers or another person’s data to a public AI service. Never use generated output as the sole basis for medical, legal, financial, safeguarding or religious decisions. Immediate threats, grooming, blackmail, self-harm material, sexual exploitation or credible violence require a trusted adult and the appropriate local professional or emergency route.

5. Tawheed Club’s non-animate policy

Tawheed Club uses landscapes, architecture, calligraphy, geometry, objects, maps and symbolic non-animate visuals. This avoids a disputed category and keeps attention on evidence. It is a deliberate editorial standard for this organisation, not a claim that its designers have issued a universal fatwa.

The policy also rejects visual depictions of اللّٰه (ALLAH), prophets and the unseen. Generated images cannot show divine reality, angels, Paradise, Hell or a prophet truthfully. A cinematic result is imagination, not access to the unseen, and must never be presented as sacred evidence.

For educational diagrams, use non-animate icons where they communicate the concept. If a real case requires an image—identity, medicine, safeguarding or lawful documentation—take the precise question to a qualified scholar and the responsible professional.

Accessibility matters: meaningful alt text, readable contrast and captions are part of responsible design. Decoration should not hide text or create a false emotional certainty around a disputed claim.

6. Use the image decision path

Qur’an 99:7 teaches that even an atom’s weight of good will be seen. A carefully sourced diagram, privacy-preserving educational visual or truthful record may serve real benefit.

Complete six fields: medium and process; animate or non-animate subject; purpose and audience; consent and ownership; deception and harm; qualified ruling followed. If any field is unknown, do not publish merely because the generator produced an attractive result.
