Gharar, Maysir, Insurance and Risk · lesson 4
Insurance questions often involve faith, law, employment, mortgages, driving, healthcare and family protection at once. The International Islamic Fiqh Academy has issued institutional resolutions distinguishing fixed-premium commercial insurance from cooperative insurance, while also calling for careful standards and supervision of cooperative practice. These are attributed contemporary conclusions, not Qur’anic verses, and they do not remove the need to inspect a current policy and a person’s circumstances.

Ayah 17:36
A human-reviewed full transliteration is being prepared. Listen to the complete ayah and use the Arabic with a capable teacher rather than relying on an unreviewed technical conversion.
Transliteration can help you begin, but it cannot reproduce every Arabic sound or replace listening, tajwid study, or correction from a capable teacher.Read from right to left. Each column keeps one Arabic word, its reading aid and its contextual gloss together. Select a word to hear it.
Saheeh International is the primary reading. The two named comparisons make translation choices visible; none is presented as the Arabic Qur’an itself.
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart – about all those [one] will be questioned.
(O man), follow not that whereof thou hast no knowledge. Lo! the hearing and the sight and the heart – of each of these it will be asked.
And pursue not that of which thou hast no knowledge; for every act of hearing, or of seeing or of (feeling in) the heart will be enquired into (on the Day of Reckoning).

Inspect Qur’an 17:36 and the named translations on Quran.com
Qur’an 17:36 forbids following what is not known, so “insurance”, “mutual”, “cooperative” or “takaful” is not a complete description. Collect the policy, participant terms, exclusions, contribution basis, fees, fund rules, investments, guarantees, surplus and deficit treatment. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.
Read the complete evidence panel before reducing it to a step. The Arabic, named translation, source locator and explanation have different roles; preserving those roles lets a learner worship with confidence without turning a short guide into an unsupported ruling.
Keep three lines in your notes: what the source explicitly says, what this lesson explains, and what remains for qualified review. That structure makes later correction clear rather than embarrassing.
No product receives approval or rejection from its brand, country, regulator, provider or religious logo alone. This is general education, not a personal fatwa, halal certification, banking or insurance recommendation, investment advice, debt instruction, tax opinion, contract review or legal answer. Never cancel cover, stop payment, conceal facts, ignore compulsory law or breach an agreement from this page. A named product, policy, account, transaction, dispute or necessity claim requires complete current documents and appropriately qualified commercial-fiqh, regulated-finance, accounting, safeguarding and governing-law review before indexing.
Learning move: Explain “The contract must be read before the label is trusted” in plain language, name the evidence level, record one practical control and identify what still needs qualified review.

A learner-facing transliteration is deliberately withheld until the complete Arabic wording has passed assigned language review. Learn the supplication from a capable teacher rather than guessing from English letters.
This is a source-bound editorial paraphrase for understanding. It is not the Arabic report and is not presented as a verbatim translation.
Abu Hurayrah reported that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a sale determined by throwing stones and a sale involving gharar, or material contractual uncertainty.
The report establishes a prohibition concerning the reported pebble sale and gharar in sale. Jurists determine materiality, tolerated uncertainty and application to later contracts.

Sahih Muslim 1513 forbids a gharar sale, and contemporary insurance analysis asks whether and how material uncertainty operates in the contract. Identify what each party pays, promises and may receive, and who owns each fund. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.
A beginner needs a usable route and an honest boundary at the same time. Learn the shared practice first, record any circumstance that changes it, and take medical, financial, disability or school-specific questions to a qualified person who can examine the real case.
Read once for meaning and a second time for boundaries. On the second reading, test strong words such as always, never, invalid and required against the complete evidence shown.

International Islamic Fiqh Academy Resolution 9 (9/2) concludes that the fixed-periodic-premium commercial insurance form it examined contains major gharar and identifies cooperative insurance based on donation and cooperation as the alternative. Attribute the conclusion precisely and compare the current contract rather than repeating the label alone. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.
Calm completeness is the goal. Repeating an action without evidence, rushing past a required distinction, or ignoring real harm can all move the learner away from careful worship. Work through the evidence once slowly, check once, and improve through reviewed teaching.
An adult guiding a child should praise careful attention and an honest “I need to ask” answer. The aim is worship with understanding, not performance for the teacher.

IIFA Resolution 187 (2/20) reaffirmed the cooperative alternative while noting practical, regulatory and supervisory problems requiring detailed standards. Check separation of participant and shareholder funds, management basis, investments, surplus, deficit support, claims and Shariah supervision. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.
For a younger learner, use plain words, a visual sequence without animate imagery and one correction at a time. Adults should protect privacy, explain unfamiliar terms and never use religious teaching to shame a child.
If terminology becomes difficult, return to the practical question: what is the learner preparing to do, which step is established here, and what fact about the person or situation could change the answer?

Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."
Allah tasketh not a soul beyond its scope. For it (is only) that which it hath earned, and against it (only) that which it hath deserved. Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget, or miss the mark! Our Lord! Lay not on us such a burden as thou didst lay on those before us! Our Lord! Impose not on us that which we have not the strength to bear! Pardon us, absolve us and have mercy on us, Thou, our Protector, and give us victory over the disbelieving folk.
On no soul doth Allah Place a burden greater than it can bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that it earns. (Pray:) "Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; our Lord! Lay not on us a burden Like that which Thou didst lay on those before us; Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins, and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector; Help us against those who stand against faith."

Qur’an 2:286 teaches that no soul is burdened beyond capacity and includes a prayer for mercy and help. The agreement command in Qur’an 5:1 requires existing duties and connected rights to be taken seriously. Before any change, examine compulsory cover, dependants, health, housing, vehicle, employment, lender duties, cancellation loss and replacement timing. Keep Qur’anic wording, authenticated Sunnah, later juristic terminology, contemporary institutional conclusions and the facts of a modern product visibly separate.
Save the exact point that needs review. A useful learning record says what was completed, what remains uncertain, which source was checked and who should help next. That is more valuable than a confident tick beside a misunderstood step.
Explain the practice in plain language before using legal vocabulary. If the simple sentence overstates the evidence, a technical Arabic label will not repair it.

These are attributed contemporary conclusions, not Qur’anic verses, and they do not remove the need to inspect a current policy and a person’s circumstances. Your role is to slow the learning down, keep the exact evidence visible and make it safe for the learner to say, “I am not sure yet.” Open the named ayah or hadith before explaining it. Tell the learner whether they are seeing Arabic revelation, a reading aid, a named translation, a hadith translation or editorial teaching. Ask one precise question and wait. If the learner struggles, point to the relevant line, narrow the choice or replay the audio before supplying the answer. Praise honest checking and careful effort. Correct the idea or sound without labelling the learner, and never turn a mistake into embarrassment. Opening words: “We are going to learn one idea carefully and see exactly where it comes from. We can pause, replay and check the source whenever we need to.” Teach one short source phrase and one meaning. Use text cards, colour bands, paths or simple geometric symbols—never a picture of اللّٰه (ALLAH) and never an image that implies His form. Let the child point, match, listen and repeat once or twice. Use two or three evidence cards and ask the learner to match each idea to its locator. Invite a short explanation in their own words, then reopen the source to correct it together. Compare the named English translations where provided. Ask what wording differs, what remains constant, and why a translation must not be called the Arabic Qur’an itself. Require a precise claim, an exact source locator and a stated boundary. Invite the learner to distinguish established meaning from inference and to mark any unresolved question for qualified review. Gentle correction: “Let us listen once more and notice where the sound begins,” protects both accuracy and confidence. Complete one task independently before adding another.
