Divine decree and unseen realities · lesson one

This lesson studies four headings often used to organise belief in Divine decree: knowledge, writing, will and creation. The headings gather teachings from several revealed texts. They are a study framework, not a verbatim numbered list in the Qur’an, and they must never be used to invent a mechanism for the Creator’s action.

Knowledge: nothing is absent from the Creator

Meaning in translation

Saheeh International is the primary reading. The two named comparisons make translation choices visible; none is presented as the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Primary · Saheeh International

And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.

Compare · M. Pickthall

And with Him are the keys of the Invisible. None but He knoweth them. And He knoweth what is in the land and the sea. Not a leaf falleth but He knoweth it, not a grain amid the darkness of the earth, naught of wet or dry but (it is noted) in a clear record.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

With Him are the keys of the unseen, the treasures that none knoweth but He. He knoweth whatever there is on the earth and in the sea. Not a leaf doth fall but with His knowledge: there is not a grain in the darkness (or depths) of the earth, nor anything fresh or dry (green or withered), but is (inscribed) in a record clear (to those who can read).

Qur’an 6:59 places the keys of the unseen with اللّٰه (ALLAH) and describes knowledge reaching the land, sea, every falling leaf and the smallest hidden realities. The purpose is not to turn the verse into a catalogue of scientific predictions. It teaches that no event surprises the Creator and no private circumstance escapes His knowledge. Human knowledge is acquired, partial and often corrected; Divine knowledge is not a larger version of our uncertainty.

A learner should distinguish knowledge from compulsion. Knowing an action and forcing an action are different relations. Yet qadar is also more than knowledge alone, so this distinction is only one guardrail. The page does not claim that a human analogy explains timeless Divine knowledge.

Learning move: write one fact established by Qur’an 6:59 and one tempting overclaim it does not support. Explain why perfect knowledge is not human prediction enlarged.

Qur’an 57:22 states that calamities on earth or within people are in a record before they are brought into being. The next verse gives the teaching a human purpose: not being consumed by what escaped us and not boasting over what was granted. Reading the pair prevents a cold slogan. A bereaved, ill or harmed person may grieve, seek justice and receive care. The hidden record never tells us that suffering reveals a person’s worth.

“Writing” here is one heading in the teaching framework. We do not claim to possess the record, read individual futures or know the specific reason behind an event. Fortune-telling and confident predictions remain outside the evidence.

Learning move: join Qur’an 57:22 to 57:23 in one compassionate response. Include grief, practical care and humility without claiming the hidden reason for pain.

Will: human willing remains under Divine will

Qur’an 81:28 addresses whoever wills to take the straight way, and 81:29 places that human willing under the will of اللّٰه (ALLAH). The pair rules out the claim that a created will exists independently of the Creator without making commands or moral distinctions unreal. The surrounding Qur’anic teaching addresses people, offers guidance and connects action to consequence.

The lesson therefore says neither “people control everything” nor “people are puppets”. It affirms a limited human will within Divine will and refuses to describe the unseen connection through physical diagrams, timelines or created causation models. When a learner asks exactly how, the honest answer is that revelation establishes both realities without disclosing every metaphysical detail.

Learning move: place Qur’an 81:28 beside 81:29 and identify meaningful human willing under Divine will. Leave the precise unseen mechanism in a clearly marked review box.

Inspect Qur’an 54:49 and the named translations on Quran.com

Qur’an 54:49 states that everything was created according to qadar. Named translations may use decree, measure, destiny or preordination. The controlled panel keeps translator labels visible because no short English word carries every shade of the Arabic. The shared controlling claim is that created reality is not random, self-existing or beyond Divine authority.

This heading should not be turned into the sentence “wrongdoing is approved because it was created”. The Qur’an distinguishes what occurs from what is commanded, loved or forbidden. Moral teaching, repentance and justice remain meaningful. Detailed questions about Divine creation of acts and human acquisition require qualified aqidah review rather than a beginner’s confident formula.

Learning move: compare the named English renderings of qadar. State their shared direction without choosing one gloss as though it were the complete Arabic meaning.

The four headings are a map, not a revealed numbered list

Knowledge, writing, will and creation can help a learner arrange multiple passages. The map becomes misleading if presented as though one ayah says, “Qadar has four levels,” in these exact words. Place a visible label above the diagram: “Educational synthesis from several texts.” Under each heading add its locator, then write one sentence stating what the panel does not establish.

This method allows careful teaching without hiding scholarly organisation. It also makes translation and interpretation review possible. Younger learners may use four plain text cards. Older learners should explain why the source keys differ and why combining them does not create a new verse.

Learning move: put a source locator under each teaching heading and label the whole diagram “educational synthesis”. Ask a partner why that visible label matters.

Use decree to grow humility, steadiness and responsibility

Before an event, plan, pray, consult and use lawful means. During it, adapt, seek help and maintain duties. After it, give thanks for good, practise patient steadiness in pain, repair preventable harm and leave the hidden reason with اللّٰه (ALLAH). This is application, not a fifth revealed heading.

Adults should never use qadar to silence a child, excuse abuse, deny treatment or claim that hardship proves weak faith. Questions of coercion, capacity, trauma and culpability need qualified religious and professional assessment. A strong learner can affirm decree while saying, “I do not know why this happened to this person, but safety, compassion and responsible action still matter.”

Learning move: turn one difficult situation into three lines: responsible action, support required and hidden reason not known. Reject any response that blames the sufferer.

Help a learner master ALLAH's Knowledge, Writing, Will and Creation

Divine decree and unseen realities · lesson one Your role is to slow the learning down, keep the exact evidence visible and make it safe for the learner to say, “I am not sure yet.”

Begin with the source

Open the named ayah or hadith before explaining it. Tell the learner whether they are seeing Arabic revelation, a reading aid, a named translation, a hadith translation or editorial teaching.

Invite an answer before helping

Ask one precise question and wait. If the learner struggles, point to the relevant line, narrow the choice or replay the audio before supplying the answer.

Correct with dignity

Praise honest checking and careful effort. Correct the idea or sound without labelling the learner, and never turn a mistake into embarrassment.

01Prepare a focused session
  1. Read ALLAH's Knowledge, Writing, Will and Creation yourself and open every cited source before inviting the learner.
  2. Choose one realistic aim from the mastery statement. Do not try to teach the whole page in one sitting.
  3. Test any Arabic audio. If a sound is outside your confidence, plan to listen together and seek correction from a capable teacher.
  4. Remove distractions and decide when to stop: about 8–10 minutes for a younger child, 15–20 minutes for ages 8–11, or 20–30 minutes for an older learner.
  5. Keep paper optional. If Qur’anic text is printed, follow the respect and waste guidance shown above the ayah panel.

Opening words: “We are going to learn one idea carefully and see exactly where it comes from. We can pause, replay and check the source whenever we need to.”

02Use a source-led teaching conversation
  1. Connect: Ask what the learner already thinks the title means. Record the answer without immediately judging it.
  2. Read or listen: Open the first evidence panel or cited report. Hear the complete Arabic before isolating one word or phrase.
  3. Notice: Ask the learner to identify the exact words that support the first teaching point. A contextual word gloss is a clue; the complete named translation supplies the sentence meaning.
  4. Explain: Read the teaching paragraph. Ask, “Which part came directly from the source, and which part is the writer helping us understand?”
  5. Apply: Choose one practice task. Keep everyday examples within the boundary of the source; do not invent promises, hidden causes or rulings.
  6. Retrieve: Close the explanation and ask the learner to state the idea, evidence locator and one careful application in their own words.
03Questions for this exact resource
  • “What does Knowledge: nothing is absent from the Creator mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 6:59)?”
  • “What does Writing: the record precedes created events mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 57:22)?”
  • “Which sentence is revelation or hadith, and which sentence is explanation?”
  • “What would be an overstatement that the cited source does not allow us to make?”
04Adapt the same truth for different ages

Ages 5–7

Teach one short source phrase and one meaning. Use text cards, colour bands, paths or simple geometric symbols—never a picture of اللّٰه (ALLAH) and never an image that implies His form. Let the child point, match, listen and repeat once or twice.

Ages 8–11

Use two or three evidence cards and ask the learner to match each idea to its locator. Invite a short explanation in their own words, then reopen the source to correct it together.

Ages 12–15

Compare the named English translations where provided. Ask what wording differs, what remains constant, and why a translation must not be called the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Ages 16+ and adults

Require a precise claim, an exact source locator and a stated boundary. Invite the learner to distinguish established meaning from inference and to mark any unresolved question for qualified review.

05Support Arabic without creating false confidence
  1. Listen to the whole ayah or supplication first.
  2. Follow the Arabic from right to left and use the word-level controls only after hearing the complete wording.
  3. Treat transliteration as temporary scaffolding. It cannot reproduce every Arabic sound.
  4. Let the learner echo a short unit, then return it to the full phrase so meaning and pronunciation remain connected.
  5. If neither of you can hear or form a sound confidently, record it for a capable Qur’an or Arabic teacher. Do not manufacture an English substitute and call it exact.

Gentle correction: “Let us listen once more and notice where the sound begins,” protects both accuracy and confidence.

06Choose one useful follow-up
  • Study every controlled evidence panel in context.
  • Complete the consolidation prompt and use saved progress to resume precisely.

Complete one task independently before adding another. Adult support should reveal the route, not hide whether the learner can use it.

07Revisit for durable mastery

After 24 hours · five minutes

  1. Ask for the central idea without showing the answer.
  2. Ask the learner to find its source locator.
  3. Replay one Arabic phrase and reconnect it to the complete meaning.
  4. Correct by reopening the source, then end with one successful retrieval.

After seven days · eight minutes

  1. Ask for the idea, source and boundary in the learner’s own words.
  2. Retry the most difficult mastery question.
  3. Apply the idea to one new but appropriate situation.
  4. Record what is secure and what needs another supported attempt.
