Islam, Christianity and Judaism: Qur’an-First Questions

Explore shared prophetic history and real doctrinal differences through the Qur’an, with careful language about Jesus, Mary, earlier revelation and respectful dialogue.

Named sourcesMobile responsiveProgress enabled
Course contentFree access

This course gives a Qur’an-first route through questions that often become confused or hostile. It honours every prophet whom the Qur’an honours, states Tawheed without dilution, and treats Christian and Jewish neighbours as human beings whose beliefs must be represented truthfully.

1. Begin with revelation, not inherited caricatures

A comparison can fail before it begins. One learner may repeat a social-media slogan about Christianity; another may assume every Jewish person holds the same theology; another may speak of Islam as though culture and revelation were interchangeable. The disciplined beginning is different: read the Qur’an’s own claims, name exactly what is affirmed or rejected, and ask living people to explain their own position rather than guessing it.

Each gold Qur’an panel reproduces controlled Uthmani Arabic and places named English translations beside it. A translation communicates meaning but is not the Arabic Qur’an itself. The explanation first states what the verse says, then marks any educational inference. The linked hadith locators identify the collection and report so that a reader can inspect the wording and setting.

Respect and precision boundary: “Christian”, “Jewish” and “Muslim” identify large, internally diverse communities. This resource compares specific claims with the Qur’an; it does not assign one belief, motive or character to every person carrying a label. Ask a person how they understand their own belief, describe it fairly, and compare the claim rather than attacking their intelligence, ancestry or worth. Doctrinal clarity does not permit mockery, hostility, coercion or collective blame.

The course does not teach that all religions say the same thing. That would hide the very differences the Qur’an addresses. It also does not teach that disagreement cancels courtesy or justice. A Muslim can say, with equal seriousness, “I respect your human dignity” and “I do not believe this claim about the Creator.” These are not contradictory statements.

Use the order of the course. First trace the common prophetic call. Then study Mary and Jesus in the Qur’an. Next examine the Qur’an’s rejection of Trinity and divine sonship. Finally learn how the Qur’an describes earlier revelations and directs dialogue. The order prevents a negative-only presentation in which learners hear what Islam rejects before they understand the broad prophetic message it affirms.

2. The prophets call to one Creator

And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allāh and avoid ṭāghūt."1 And among them were those whom Allāh guided, and among them were those upon whom error was [deservedly] decreed. So proceed [i.e., travel] through the earth and observe how was the end of the deniers.

Compare · M. Pickthall

And verily We have raised in every nation a messenger, (proclaiming): Serve Allah and shun false gods. Then some of them (there were) whom Allah guided, and some of them (there were) upon whom error had just hold. Do but travel in the land and see the nature of the consequence for the deniers!

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

For We assuredly sent amongst every People a messenger, (with the Command), "Serve Allah, and eschew Evil": of the People were some whom Allah guided, and some on whom error became inevitably (established). So travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who denied (the Truth).

Qur’an 2:136 instructs believers to affirm what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the descendants, Moses, Jesus and the prophets, making no rejection among them while submitting to اللّٰه (ALLAH). The verse joins continuity with submission; honouring a messenger does not make that messenger divine.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3442 records the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) saying that he is nearest to Jesus son of Mary and describing the prophets as paternal brothers. The comparison communicates kinship of mission while acknowledging distinct historical communities and laws. It does not erase the Qur’an’s final criterion or turn prophets into interchangeable cultural symbols.

Judaism and Christianity both preserve names and histories that Muslims also recognise, but shared names do not guarantee identical accounts or doctrines. Say “the Qur’an’s account of Moses” or “the Christian claim being discussed” instead of implying that one English label makes every detail identical. Precision allows a real conversation.

A learner should emerge able to distinguish three propositions: all true messengers came from the same Creator; Muslims are commanded to believe in the messengers named by revelation; worship belongs to the Creator and never to a messenger. Keeping all three together prevents rejection of prophets on one side and elevation of prophets into divinity on the other.

3. Mary and Jesus are honoured without being worshipped

O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allāh except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allāh and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allāh and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist – it is better for you. Indeed, Allāh is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.

Compare · M. Pickthall

O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion nor utter aught concerning Allah save the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and His word which He conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and say not "Three" – Cease! (it is) better for you! – Allah is only One Allah. Far is it removed from His Transcendent Majesty that He should have a son. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is sufficient as Defender.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) a messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His messengers. Say not "Trinity": desist: it will be better for you: for Allah is one Allah: Glory be to Him: (far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs.

Qur’an 4:171 addresses People of the Scripture, names the Messiah Jesus son of Mary as a messenger of اللّٰه (ALLAH), His word directed to Mary and a spirit from Him, then commands belief in اللّٰه (ALLAH) and His messengers and rejects saying “Three”. The whole verse controls the terms: honouring Jesus and rejecting his divinity occur together.

The miraculous birth is not treated as evidence that Jesus is the Creator or a child of the Creator. The Qur’an repeatedly connects creation with the command and power of اللّٰه (ALLAH). Mary’s truthful astonishment in Qur’an 3:47 is answered by divine creation and decree, not by a human father and not by divine parenthood.

Sahih al-Bukhari 3445 records the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) warning against exaggerating praise of him as Christians praised the son of Mary, and directing people to call him the servant and Messenger of اللّٰه (ALLAH). The report protects prophetic honour by placing it in servanthood and messengership. It must not be used as an excuse to insult Christians; it teaches Muslims to guard their own speech and worship.

For adults teaching children: begin with what Muslims affirm: one Creator, honoured messengers, truthfulness and good manners. Use a two-column card headed “what this source actually says” and “what I still need to ask”. Do not invite a child to ridicule another pupil’s family, stage a confrontational debate or decide another person’s final standing before اللّٰه (ALLAH). Practise gentle sentences such as, “May I ask what you mean by that?”, “The Qur’an teaches…”, and, “I do not know enough to answer that fairly.”

And We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allāh has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method. Had Allāh willed, He would have made you one nation [united in religion], but [He intended] to test you in what He has given you; so race to [all that is] good. To Allāh is your return all together, and He will [then] inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.

Compare · M. Pickthall

And unto thee have We revealed the Scripture with the truth, confirming whatever Scripture was before it, and a watcher over it. So judge between them by that which Allah hath revealed, and follow not their desires away from the truth which hath come unto thee. For each We have appointed a divine law and a traced-out way. Had Allah willed He could have made you one community. But that He may try you by that which He hath given you (He hath made you as ye are). So vie one with another in good works. Unto Allah ye will all return, and He will then inform you of that wherein ye differ.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so judge between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that hath come to thee. To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way. If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah; it is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute;

Qur’an 5:48 presents the Book revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) in truth, confirming previous Scripture and as muhaymin over it—rendered across named translations with senses such as criterion, authority, guardian or witness. The verse directs judgement by what اللّٰه (ALLAH) revealed and acknowledges difference before the final return to Him.

The Qur’an’s disagreement is real. Qur’an 4:171 says not to say “Three”; Qur’an 5:72 rejects identifying the Messiah with اللّٰه (ALLAH); Qur’an 5:73 rejects saying اللّٰه (ALLAH) is one of three; and Surah al-Ikhlas denies begetting, being begotten and any equal. A resource that hides these statements would not convey the Qur’an honestly.

A good explanation does not need a cartoon version of the Trinity. Christian traditions use specialised language and do not generally describe their doctrine as belief in three independent gods. A Muslim should represent that self-description fairly and then explain that the Qur’an still rejects threefold divine formulation, incarnation and sonship while declaring the Creator absolutely One.

Likewise, do not use “son” carelessly. Some people mean a literal biological claim, others a metaphysical relation, and others use devotional language without defining it. Ask what is meant. Then explain the Qur’anic boundary: the Creator does not beget, is not begotten, owns all that is in the heavens and earth, and has no equal. The answer rests on revelation, not ridicule.

The most useful sentence is often the simplest: Muslims love and honour Jesus as Messiah and messenger, believe in his miraculous birth, and do not worship him. Muslims honour Mary as a chosen and truthful woman and do not direct worship to her. Worship is for اللّٰه (ALLAH) alone.

And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."

Compare · M. Pickthall

And argue not with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our Allah and your Allah is One, and unto Him we surrender.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better (than mere disputation), unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong (and injury): but say, "We believe in the revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you; Our Allah and your Allah is one; and it is to Him we bow (in Islam)."

Qur’an 29:46 directs believers not to argue with People of the Scripture except in the best manner, apart from those who act unjustly, and to declare belief in what was revealed to both communities and in one God to Whom Muslims submit. “Best manner” governs method without making every disputed claim true.

Source boundary: the Qur’an says that the Torah and Gospel were revealed by اللّٰه (ALLAH). This website does not quote a present-day Biblical text as authority over the Qur’an or assume that every present edition, interpretation or community practice is identical to the original revelation. When a report from People of the Scripture is neither confirmed nor denied by revelation, Sahih al-Bukhari 4485 records the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) directing Muslims not to assert either side and to affirm what اللّٰه (ALLAH) revealed.

Sahih al-Bukhari 1312–1313 reports that a Jewish funeral procession passed and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) stood; when its identity was mentioned, he responded with a question about the human soul. The report is presented in its funeral setting. It illustrates recognition of human life and gravity across communal difference; it is not a complete theory of interfaith relations by itself.

Respectful conversation requires both ears and boundaries. Listen long enough to describe the other claim in words its holder recognises. Ask permission before a sensitive question. Do not demand that a colleague defend every historical act committed under a religious label. Do not conceal the Islamic answer to appear agreeable. If the exchange becomes abusive, end it calmly rather than competing in contempt.

Qur’an 16:125 adds wisdom, good instruction and the best form of argument. Wisdom includes choosing the right time, recognising the learner’s background and knowing when to say “I need to check.” Accuracy is part of kindness. A confident fabricated quotation can damage trust even when the speaker intended to defend Islam.

6. Complete the pathway and practise accountable speech

Read One Creator and the Call of the Prophets, then Jesus and Mary in the Qur’an. Continue with Trinity, Sonship and Tawheed and Earlier Revelations, the Qur’an as Criterion and Respectful Dialogue.

After the readings, complete the mastery check. The 100% threshold protects distinctions that are easily blurred: honour is not worship; shared history is not identical doctrine; respect is not agreement; and disagreement is not permission to harm. Then use the conversation guide to prepare a real or fictional discussion.

Before speaking, write four lines: “The verse says…”, “The claim I am comparing is…”, “The person says they believe…”, and “What I still do not know is…”. If any line is empty, slow down. This habit prevents a quotation from being stretched beyond its subject and prevents a community label from replacing evidence.

The course succeeds when the learner loves revelation more than winning an argument. That learner can speak clearly about Tawheed, honour the prophets, refuse false claims, protect a neighbour’s dignity and correct their own mistake. Such speech points toward the greatness of اللّٰه (ALLAH) because it submits both message and manner to His guidance.

Course consolidation: imagine that three people use the phrase “I believe in one God” but explain it differently. Do not assume the shared sentence has removed every difference. Ask what “one”, “God”, “messenger” and “worship” mean in each account. Next place the answers beside the Qur’an’s propositions: the Creator is uniquely One, every true messenger is His servant, Jesus is Messiah and messenger, and worship belongs to the Creator alone. This process is patient because words can hide different meanings, and firm because revelation supplies the measure.

The same discipline applies to history. A good action by a Muslim does not prove every Muslim claim, and a wrong action by a Christian or Jew does not disprove a scripture. People and propositions require different evidence. Discuss a teaching through its source; discuss conduct through verified facts; discuss a person with justice. This prevents both romanticising communities and blaming millions of people for something they did not choose or do.

Further practice: At the end of the course, speak a two-minute summary without notes. Include one shared prophetic principle, one Qur’anic honour given to Mary or Jesus, one decisive Tawheed difference and one rule for respectful dialogue. Then reopen the sources and mark any phrase that was broader than its evidence. This final act makes correction part of worship rather than an embarrassment.
