The Six Articles of Faith · lesson one

Belief in اللّٰه (ALLAH) is the foundation that gives every other article of faith its place. This lesson explains unique oneness, complete dependence, exclusive worship and the rule that the Creator is not compared with creation. It asks learners to begin with revealed descriptions rather than inherited pictures or philosophical guesses.

Belief is a continuing commitment to revealed truth

O you who have believed, believe in Allāh and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down upon His Messenger and the Scripture which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allāh, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day has certainly gone far astray.

O ye who believe! Believe in Allah and His messenger and the Scripture which He hath revealed unto His messenger, and the Scripture which He revealed aforetime. Whoso disbelieveth in Allah and His angels and His scriptures and His messengers and the Last Day, he verily hath wandered far astray.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

O ye who believe! Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and the scripture which He hath sent to His Messenger and the scripture which He sent to those before (him). Any who denieth Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Day of Judgment, hath gone far, far astray.

Qur’an 4:136 addresses believers and commands belief in اللّٰه (ALLAH), His messenger and the revealed books. The wording shows that faith is not merely a childhood label stored away after it is first learned. A learner continues to receive, affirm and live by revealed guidance. The verse also names the serious loss involved in denying اللّٰه (ALLAH), angels, books, messengers and the Last Day, but this course does not turn that general teaching into a verdict about a particular person.

Begin by asking, “Who is speaking, what does the verse command, and which objects of belief does it name?” This source-first order is safer than asking a learner to describe God from imagination. It also prevents culture, family custom or an internet slogan from becoming the controlling definition of faith.

Learning move: Underline the objects of belief named in Qur’an 4:136 and label the verse as a continuing command. Do not convert its general warning into a judgement about a named learner.

The four verses of Surah al-Ikhlas belong together. The first announces unique oneness. The second teaches that all creation depends upon Him while He is not dependent. The third denies begetting and being born. The fourth denies any equivalent. Detaching the first verse from the other three can shrink Tawheed into a bare number, as though “one” meant only the first item in a group of comparable gods.

A sound explanation therefore says more than “Muslims believe in one God.” It explains that اللّٰه (ALLAH) has no partner, parent, child or equal and that creation depends upon Him. Named translations may render important words differently; the controlled panels preserve those labels. No one English word is presented as an exhaustive replacement for the Qur’anic wording.

Qur’an 42:11 places two necessary truths together: nothing is like Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing. The learner is not asked to choose between denying what revelation states and imagining it in a created form. The safe method is affirmation without comparison and without asking the page to explain an unseen modality that the verse does not disclose.

This boundary matters in visual culture. A cosmic photograph, light effect, throne illustration, human silhouette or giant hand must never be labelled as a picture of the Creator. A non-animate scene may be used as a created sign only when its caption makes that distinction explicit. Grandeur comes from the revealed meaning, not from pretending that human design can contain the Divine reality.

Learning move: Place “nothing is like Him” beside the verse’s affirmation of hearing and sight. Ask the learner to explain why neither comparison nor denial preserves the whole verse.

Qur’an 2:163 states that the deity is one and joins this declaration to the mercy Names in the same verse. Qur’an 51:56 states the purpose of creating jinn and humankind in relation to worship. Belief is therefore not only an opinion that a Creator exists. It carries a direction: worship, ultimate supplication, deepest reliance and willing obedience are directed to اللّٰه (ALLAH) alone.

Ordinary requests to a capable living person are not worship merely because help is requested. A child may ask a parent for water, a patient may ask a clinician for treatment and a traveller may ask for directions. The distinction is between created help within created ability and worshipful dependence or an unseen power that belongs only to the Creator. Complex cases require qualified guidance rather than instant accusations.

Learning move: Compare worshipful dependence with an ordinary request to a capable living person. Test each example for ability, presence and whether worship is being directed to creation.

Faith changes ordinary decisions without producing arrogance

A learner who knows that all depend upon اللّٰه (ALLAH) can receive provision with gratitude rather than entitlement. A learner who knows that none is comparable to Him can resist superstition and stop expecting an object, celebrity or institution to control the unseen. A learner who knows that worship belongs to Him can inspect intentions while still treating other people with patience and justice.

None of this authorises self-praise. The lesson cannot certify sincerity or claim that completing a module proves spiritual rank. When a learner notices inconsistency, the next step is not despair or public confession. It is to return, correct what can be corrected, seek forgiveness and ask for reliable help where rights, safety or specialist rulings are involved.

Learning move: Choose one unnoticed daily decision and name how gratitude, non-superstition or exclusive worship changes it. Keep intentions private and assess only the stated reasoning.

Teach the foundation with clarity and restraint

For a younger learner, use three questions: “Who made us?”, “Who deserves worship?” and “Is anything like Him?” Let the child answer from a short controlled panel and praise careful source use. Do not demand an imagined picture. For an older learner, ask them to compare 112:1–4 with 42:11 and explain why oneness, non-comparison and affirmation must remain together.

Adults should watch for two unhelpful extremes: making the subject so abstract that it never reaches daily worship, or making it so emotionally intense that a child becomes afraid to ask honest questions. A question is not proof of disbelief. Record it, identify what the current source answers and seek qualified help for what remains.

Learning move: Teach the three-question child script, then ask an older learner to supply the verse locator for every answer. Record unanswered questions for qualified review rather than improvising.

Help a learner master Faith in ALLAH: The Foundation of Belief

The Six Articles of Faith · lesson one Your role is to slow the learning down, keep the exact evidence visible and make it safe for the learner to say, “I am not sure yet.”

Begin with the source

Open the named ayah or hadith before explaining it. Tell the learner whether they are seeing Arabic revelation, a reading aid, a named translation, a hadith translation or editorial teaching.

Invite an answer before helping

Ask one precise question and wait. If the learner struggles, point to the relevant line, narrow the choice or replay the audio before supplying the answer.

Correct with dignity

Praise honest checking and careful effort. Correct the idea or sound without labelling the learner, and never turn a mistake into embarrassment.

01Prepare a focused session
  1. Read Faith in ALLAH: The Foundation of Belief yourself and open every cited source before inviting the learner.
  2. Choose one realistic aim from the mastery statement. Do not try to teach the whole page in one sitting.
  3. Test any Arabic audio. If a sound is outside your confidence, plan to listen together and seek correction from a capable teacher.
  4. Remove distractions and decide when to stop: about 8–10 minutes for a younger child, 15–20 minutes for ages 8–11, or 20–30 minutes for an older learner.
  5. Keep paper optional. If Qur’anic text is printed, follow the respect and waste guidance shown above the ayah panel.

Opening words: “We are going to learn one idea carefully and see exactly where it comes from. We can pause, replay and check the source whenever we need to.”

02Use a source-led teaching conversation
  1. Connect: Ask what the learner already thinks the title means. Record the answer without immediately judging it.
  2. Read or listen: Open the first evidence panel or cited report. Hear the complete Arabic before isolating one word or phrase.
  3. Notice: Ask the learner to identify the exact words that support the first teaching point. A contextual word gloss is a clue; the complete named translation supplies the sentence meaning.
  4. Explain: Read the teaching paragraph. Ask, “Which part came directly from the source, and which part is the writer helping us understand?”
  5. Apply: Choose one practice task. Keep everyday examples within the boundary of the source; do not invent promises, hidden causes or rulings.
  6. Retrieve: Close the explanation and ask the learner to state the idea, evidence locator and one careful application in their own words.
03Questions for this exact resource
  • “What does Belief is a continuing commitment to revealed truth mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 4:136)?”
  • “What does Surah al-Ikhlas teaches unique oneness as one unit mean here, and which words or source locator support your answer (Qur'an 112:1)?”
  • “Which sentence is revelation or hadith, and which sentence is explanation?”
  • “What would be an overstatement that the cited source does not allow us to make?”
04Adapt the same truth for different ages

Ages 5–7

Teach one short source phrase and one meaning. Use text cards, colour bands, paths or simple geometric symbols—never a picture of اللّٰه (ALLAH) and never an image that implies His form. Let the child point, match, listen and repeat once or twice.

Ages 8–11

Use two or three evidence cards and ask the learner to match each idea to its locator. Invite a short explanation in their own words, then reopen the source to correct it together.

Ages 12–15

Compare the named English translations where provided. Ask what wording differs, what remains constant, and why a translation must not be called the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Ages 16+ and adults

Require a precise claim, an exact source locator and a stated boundary. Invite the learner to distinguish established meaning from inference and to mark any unresolved question for qualified review.

05Support Arabic without creating false confidence
  1. Listen to the whole ayah or supplication first.
  2. Follow the Arabic from right to left and use the word-level controls only after hearing the complete wording.
  3. Treat transliteration as temporary scaffolding. It cannot reproduce every Arabic sound.
  4. Let the learner echo a short unit, then return it to the full phrase so meaning and pronunciation remain connected.
  5. If neither of you can hear or form a sound confidently, record it for a capable Qur’an or Arabic teacher. Do not manufacture an English substitute and call it exact.

Gentle correction: “Let us listen once more and notice where the sound begins,” protects both accuracy and confidence.

06Choose one useful follow-up
  • Study every controlled evidence panel in context.
  • Complete the consolidation prompt and use saved progress to resume precisely.

Complete one task independently before adding another. Adult support should reveal the route, not hide whether the learner can use it.

07Revisit for durable mastery

After 24 hours · five minutes

  1. Ask for the central idea without showing the answer.
  2. Ask the learner to find its source locator.
  3. Replay one Arabic phrase and reconnect it to the complete meaning.
  4. Correct by reopening the source, then end with one successful retrieval.

After seven days · eight minutes

  1. Ask for the idea, source and boundary in the learner’s own words.
  2. Retry the most difficult mastery question.
  3. Apply the idea to one new but appropriate situation.
  4. Record what is secure and what needs another supported attempt.
