Earlier Revelations, the Qur’an as Criterion and Respectful Dialogue

Understand what the Qur’an says about the Torah and Gospel, how it presents itself as a confirming criterion, and how Muslims should discuss differences with wisdom.

The Qur’an affirms that the Torah and Gospel were revealed by the Creator and presents the Qur’an as truth, confirmation and governing criterion. It also commands wisdom and the best manner in dialogue. These teachings belong together.

1. Define the scope before discussing scriptures

This lesson explains the Qur’an’s statements about revelation. It does not perform textual criticism of every manuscript, translation or edition of the Bible, and it does not claim that every Jew or Christian has one view of inspiration. Those are separate research questions requiring named evidence and expertise.

Each gold Qur’an panel reproduces controlled Uthmani Arabic and places named English translations beside it. A translation communicates meaning but is not the Arabic Qur’an itself. The explanation first states what the verse says, then marks any educational inference. The linked hadith locators identify the collection and report so that a reader can inspect the wording and setting.

Respect and precision boundary: “Christian”, “Jewish” and “Muslim” identify large, internally diverse communities. This resource compares specific claims with the Qur’an; it does not assign one belief, motive or character to every person carrying a label. Ask a person how they understand their own belief, describe it fairly, and compare the claim rather than attacking their intelligence, ancestry or worth. Doctrinal clarity does not permit mockery, hostility, coercion or collective blame.

Source boundary: the Qur’an says that the Torah and Gospel were revealed by اللّٰه (ALLAH). This website does not quote a present-day Biblical text as authority over the Qur’an or assume that every present edition, interpretation or community practice is identical to the original revelation. When a report from People of the Scripture is neither confirmed nor denied by revelation, Sahih al-Bukhari 4485 records the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) directing Muslims not to assert either side and to affirm what اللّٰه (ALLAH) revealed.

The safest phrasing is precise: “The Qur’an says اللّٰه (ALLAH) revealed the Torah and Gospel” and “The Qur’an presents itself as confirming and muhaymin over previous Scripture.” Do not collapse this into either “everything now printed is identical to original revelation” or “nothing true remains anywhere.” Neither extreme follows from the sentence alone.

2. The Qur’an names earlier revelation

Qur’an 3:3 says that اللّٰه (ALLAH) sent the Book down to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) in truth, confirming what came before it, and that He revealed the Torah and Gospel. The same verse locates all three acts of revelation with one source.

Confirmation means the Qur’an affirms the divine origin and truths established by اللّٰه (ALLAH); it does not make another text the judge over the Qur’an. Read the next steps in the Qur’an’s own argument rather than importing a conclusion from the English word alone.

Moses and Jesus therefore belong inside Muslim belief. A Muslim who mocks the original Torah or Gospel as though اللّٰه (ALLAH) never revealed them contradicts the Qur’anic account. A Muslim also follows the Qur’an as the final governing revelation received through the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him).

When speaking with another community, distinguish “your current text”, “your interpretation”, and “the original revelation named by the Qur’an”. These are not automatically identical propositions. Ask which one is being discussed.

Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to Allāh] judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars by that with which they were entrusted of the Scripture of Allāh, and they were witnesses thereto. So do not fear the people but fear Me, and do not exchange My verses for a small price [i.e., worldly gain]. And whoever does not judge by what Allāh has revealed – then it is those who are the disbelievers.

Compare · M. Pickthall

Lo! We did reveal the Torah, wherein is guidance and a light, by which the prophets who surrendered (unto Allah) judged the Jews, and the rabbis and the priests (judged) by such of Allah's Scripture as they were bidden to observe, and thereunto were they witnesses. So fear not mankind, but fear Me. And My revelations for a little gain. Whoso judgeth not by that which Allah hath revealed: such are disbelievers.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

It was We who revealed the law (to Moses): therein was guidance and light. By its standard have been judged the Jews, by the prophets who bowed (as in Islam) to Allah's will, by the rabbis and the doctors of law: for to them was entrusted the protection of Allah's book, and they were witnesses thereto: therefore fear not men, but fear me, and sell not my signs for a miserable price. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) Unbelievers.

Qur’an 5:46 says Jesus son of Mary was sent following earlier prophets, confirming the Torah before him, and that اللّٰه (ALLAH) gave him the Gospel containing guidance and light, confirming the Torah and providing guidance and instruction for the God-conscious.

These verses honour original revelation and responsibility toward it. They should not be used to insult Jewish or Christian neighbours, nor should they be used to bypass the Qur’an’s later statement of criterion. Each verse occupies a place in the argument.

The English word “Gospel” may make a modern reader think immediately of four later narrative books. The Qur’anic term al-Injil refers here to revelation given to Jesus. State that distinction plainly without pretending this short lesson settles the complete textual history.

And We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allāh has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method. Had Allāh willed, He would have made you one nation [united in religion], but [He intended] to test you in what He has given you; so race to [all that is] good. To Allāh is your return all together, and He will [then] inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.

Compare · M. Pickthall

And unto thee have We revealed the Scripture with the truth, confirming whatever Scripture was before it, and a watcher over it. So judge between them by that which Allah hath revealed, and follow not their desires away from the truth which hath come unto thee. For each We have appointed a divine law and a traced-out way. Had Allah willed He could have made you one community. But that He may try you by that which He hath given you (He hath made you as ye are). So vie one with another in good works. Unto Allah ye will all return, and He will then inform you of that wherein ye differ.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so judge between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that hath come to thee. To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way. If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah; it is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute;

Qur’an 5:48 says the Book was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) in truth, confirming previous Scripture and muhaymin over it. Named translations render muhaymin with related senses including criterion, supreme authority, guardian and witness. The verse then directs judgement by revelation, warns against desire, mentions distinct law and method, commands competition in good and places final clarification with اللّٰه (ALLAH).

Because the Arabic term carries a rich range, the panel preserves it and shows multiple translations. The governing point is not that readers may select whichever earlier claim they prefer. The Qur’an confirms truth and stands as the controlling witness for Muslim belief.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4485 reports that Jewish people recited the Torah in Hebrew and explained it in Arabic to Muslims; the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) instructed Muslims neither to affirm nor deny those reports and to state belief in اللّٰه (ALLAH) and what was revealed. This concerns reports lacking a decisive confirmation or contradiction. It does not command suspension about what the Qur’an itself clearly affirms or rejects.

A practical three-way filter is useful: if the Qur’an or authentic Sunnah confirms a proposition, affirm it; if revelation contradicts it, reject the contradiction; if neither confirms nor denies it, do not present it as established Islamic belief. Complex cases should be referred to qualified scholarship.

Meaning in translation

Saheeh International is the primary reading. The two named comparisons make translation choices visible; none is presented as the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Primary · Saheeh International

And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."

Compare · M. Pickthall

And argue not with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our Allah and your Allah is One, and unto Him we surrender.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better (than mere disputation), unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong (and injury): but say, "We believe in the revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you; Our Allah and your Allah is one; and it is to Him we bow (in Islam)."

Qur’an 29:46 directs believers to engage People of the Scripture only in the best manner, except those who act unjustly, and to affirm revelation to both communities, one God and submission to Him.

“Best manner” includes accurate quotation, patient listening, proportionate tone and refusal to humiliate. It does not mean hiding Tawheed. “Wisdom” includes knowing that a distressed neighbour, a school lesson and a formal theological discussion require different depth and timing.

Sahih al-Bukhari 1312–1313 preserves a brief event in which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) stood as a Jewish funeral passed and responded to its identity by asking whether it was not a soul. Preserve the funeral context and do not inflate it into claims the report does not make. It nevertheless teaches learners not to let religious difference erase human gravity.

6. Prepare a transparent answer

Use this five-line template: “The question is…”; “The Qur’an says…”; “The other person describes their belief as…”; “The point of agreement is…”; “The point of difference is…”. Add “I do not know” wherever evidence ends. This produces a more honest answer than blending several traditions into a vague slogan.

Never quote an earlier scripture on Tawheed Club as if it governed Qur’anic meaning. A comparative article may accurately identify another community’s claim from an authoritative source when the project later commissions that research, but it must label the source and must not give it authority over revelation.

For children, use fictional, low-pressure questions. Do not assign a child to challenge a classmate or report private conversations. The adult should model curiosity and boundaries, check quotations and intervene if discussion becomes bullying.

Complete the mastery check, use the conversation guide, or return to the course.

For adults teaching children: begin with what Muslims affirm: one Creator, honoured messengers, truthfulness and good manners. Use a two-column card headed “what this source actually says” and “what I still need to ask”. Do not invite a child to ridicule another pupil’s family, stage a confrontational debate or decide another person’s final standing before اللّٰه (ALLAH). Practise gentle sentences such as, “May I ask what you mean by that?”, “The Qur’an teaches…”, and, “I do not know enough to answer that fairly.”

Worked classification: “The Torah was originally revealed by اللّٰه (ALLAH)” is confirmed by Qur’an 5:44. “The Gospel was given to Jesus” is confirmed by Qur’an 5:46. A detailed story taken only from an unverified external report may fall into the unconfirmed category. A claim that identifies Jesus as the Creator conflicts with Qur’an 5:72. Notice that classification applies to the proposition and its evidence; it is not a shortcut to insult the person who repeats it.

The word “corruption” can also be used too loosely. The Qur’an contains particular criticisms concerning concealment, distortion, forgetting and writing claims, but a beginner should not turn those passages into an unsourced history of every manuscript. State only what the selected verse establishes. For a full textual-history question, gather specialist evidence and present the limits openly. This course’s operative rule is simpler: Muslims use the Qur’an as the final criterion and do not make an earlier or later human text judge over it.

When a conversation produces a new claim, pause before searching random snippets. Write the exact question, find the relevant Qur’anic passage, check a recognised translation and tafsir, and verify any hadith locator. If the claim concerns another community’s official doctrine, consult a source that community actually recognises and label it as their self-description. This double-source discipline prevents both Islamic misquotation and comparative caricature.

Further practice: Create a small source ledger for every comparative claim: date checked, exact wording, Qur’an locator, hadith locator if any, translation used and the limit of the conclusion. Recheck the record before publishing or teaching it. If the other community’s belief is described, add the official or first-person source used for that description. This makes transparent where Islamic authority ends and comparative description begins.
