Qur’an-First Belief Comparison and Conversation Guide

Use a printable, source-led guide to compare claims rather than caricature people, prepare respectful questions and explain Tawheed with clarity and care.

Applied and progress-trackedClassroom suitableFree access
Guided study toolPrintable and device-ready

This printable guide helps you prepare a Qur’an-first conversation without reducing another person to a label. It turns source checking, fair restatement and clear Tawheed into a repeatable six-step practice.

1. Set purpose and consent before content

Write the purpose of the conversation in one sentence. A sound purpose might be “to understand what my neighbour means and explain the Qur’an’s teaching about Jesus.” “To defeat them publicly” is not an educational purpose. Ask whether the person wants the conversation and agree how long it will last.

Each gold Qur’an panel reproduces controlled Uthmani Arabic and places named English translations beside it. A translation communicates meaning but is not the Arabic Qur’an itself. The explanation first states what the verse says, then marks any educational inference. The linked hadith locators identify the collection and report so that a reader can inspect the wording and setting.

Respect and precision boundary: “Christian”, “Jewish” and “Muslim” identify large, internally diverse communities. This resource compares specific claims with the Qur’an; it does not assign one belief, motive or character to every person carrying a label. Ask a person how they understand their own belief, describe it fairly, and compare the claim rather than attacking their intelligence, ancestry or worth. Doctrinal clarity does not permit mockery, hostility, coercion or collective blame.

Choose a setting where neither person is trapped or exposed. Do not record, publish or quote a private conversation without permission. If the topic touches grief, persecution or family conflict, slow down and prioritise safety.

For a classroom, the adult selects a fictional or published claim. Children should not be asked to disclose family theology or defend a community. A teacher protects belonging while teaching truthful difference.

Printable prompt: My purpose is ______. The other person has agreed to discuss ______. We will pause if ______. I will not record or share the exchange without ______.

Primary · Saheeh International

O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allāh except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allāh and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allāh and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist – it is better for you. Indeed, Allāh is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.

Compare · M. Pickthall

O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion nor utter aught concerning Allah save the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and His word which He conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and say not "Three" – Cease! (it is) better for you! – Allah is only One Allah. Far is it removed from His Transcendent Majesty that He should have a son. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is sufficient as Defender.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) a messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His messengers. Say not "Trinity": desist: it will be better for you: for Allah is one Allah: Glory be to Him: (far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs.

Qur’an 4:171 honours Jesus as Messiah and messenger while rejecting “Three” and sonship. Use the complete verse when a conversation concerns identity and Tawheed.

Copy the verse locator, not a fragment from memory. Read at least the controlled translation panel and surrounding explanation. Write one sentence beginning “The verse explicitly says…” and a second beginning “I infer…”. Do not merge the two.

If using a hadith, record the collection, number and link. Note the setting. Sahih al-Bukhari 3445, for example, disciplines Muslim praise of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him); it should not be repackaged as a licence to belittle Christians.

Printable source card: Locator ______. Direct statement ______. Context ______. Named translation checked ______. Hadith setting, if used ______. What the source does not say ______.

3. Restate the other claim fairly

Ask the speaker to state their claim in their own words. Write it with quotation marks only if you captured it exactly. Otherwise write “My current understanding is…” and invite correction. Do not substitute an internet meme for a person’s belief.

Separate identity from proposition. “This person identifies as Christian” is biographical. “This person described the Trinity as…” is a reported claim. “Qur’an 4:171 rejects saying Three” is a revelation claim. These sentences have different sources and must not be collapsed.

Do the steelman check: would a thoughtful holder of the belief recognise your summary? Fairness does not require agreeing. It requires refusing an easier, weaker target.

Printable restatement: They said ______. I understand this to mean ______. I asked whether that was accurate: yes / no / not yet. The specific proposition I will compare is ______. I am not making a claim about every member of the community.

4. Place the Qur’an as criterion

Meaning in translation

Saheeh International is the primary reading. The two named comparisons make translation choices visible; none is presented as the Arabic Qur’an itself.

Primary · Saheeh International

And We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allāh has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method. Had Allāh willed, He would have made you one nation [united in religion], but [He intended] to test you in what He has given you; so race to [all that is] good. To Allāh is your return all together, and He will [then] inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.

Compare · M. Pickthall

And unto thee have We revealed the Scripture with the truth, confirming whatever Scripture was before it, and a watcher over it. So judge between them by that which Allah hath revealed, and follow not their desires away from the truth which hath come unto thee. For each We have appointed a divine law and a traced-out way. Had Allah willed He could have made you one community. But that He may try you by that which He hath given you (He hath made you as ye are). So vie one with another in good works. Unto Allah ye will all return, and He will then inform you of that wherein ye differ.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so judge between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that hath come to thee. To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way. If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to Allah; it is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute;

Qur’an 5:48 describes the revealed Book as truth, confirmation and muhaymin over previous Scripture. For Muslim belief, the Qur’an is not one equal vote among competing texts; it is the governing criterion.

Source boundary: the Qur’an says that the Torah and Gospel were revealed by اللّٰه (ALLAH). This website does not quote a present-day Biblical text as authority over the Qur’an or assume that every present edition, interpretation or community practice is identical to the original revelation. When a report from People of the Scripture is neither confirmed nor denied by revelation, Sahih al-Bukhari 4485 records the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Peace and blessings be upon him) directing Muslims not to assert either side and to affirm what اللّٰه (ALLAH) revealed.

Use three boxes: confirmed by Qur’an or authentic Sunnah; contradicted by them; not decisively addressed. Put only one precise proposition in each row. If classification needs tafsir, Arabic expertise or hadith assessment you do not possess, mark “refer” instead of guessing.

Do not paste long copyrighted translations from other religious texts into the worksheet. If later comparative research needs an external source, cite an authorised edition or official statement, quote minimally and label it as another community’s source—not as Islamic authority.

Printable criterion record: Proposition ______. Islamic source ______. Category: confirmed / contradicted / unconfirmed / refer. Explanation in my own words ______. Limit of my knowledge ______.

And argue not with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our Allah and your Allah is One, and unto Him we surrender.

Compare · A. Yusuf Ali

And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better (than mere disputation), unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong (and injury): but say, "We believe in the revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you; Our Allah and your Allah is one; and it is to Him we bow (in Islam)."

Qur’an 29:46 commands the best manner of engagement with People of the Scripture and a declaration of belief in revelation and one God. Method and creed remain connected.

Draft three sentences. First: “I hear you saying…” Second: “The Qur’an teaches…” Third: “Because of Tawheed, I therefore believe…” Then add one sincere question. Remove sarcasm, sweeping labels and claims about motives.

Sahih al-Bukhari 1312–1313 can remind the learner that communal difference does not erase the gravity of a human soul. Keep the report in its funeral context. Respect also includes not making a grieving moment into an unsolicited debate.

Printable response: Fair restatement ______. Qur’anic teaching ______. Tawheed conclusion ______. One respectful question ______. A phrase I removed because it caricatured or inflamed ______.

6. Reflect, correct and choose the next step

After the conversation, record what you learned, what you may have misstated and what needs checking. If you gave an inaccurate quotation or unfair summary, correct it directly. A truthful correction serves اللّٰه (ALLAH) better than protecting your image.

Do not measure success only by whether another person agreed. Measure whether you conveyed the verse accurately, maintained the Creator-creature distinction, listened honestly and avoided harm. Guidance belongs to اللّٰه (ALLAH); your responsibility includes truth and manner.

For children, the adult reviews the sheet, removes personal information and praises precise uncertainty. Never keep names, private beliefs or safeguarding disclosures in a reusable worksheet. Follow the relevant safeguarding route if a disclosure arises.

Printable reflection: I represented the claim fairly: yes / not yet. My strongest source was ______. I need to verify ______. I will correct ______. My next safe step is read / ask a qualified teacher / pause / continue by agreement.

Complete the mastery check, revisit the dialogue lesson, or return to the course.

For adults teaching children: begin with what Muslims affirm: one Creator, honoured messengers, truthfulness and good manners. Use a two-column card headed “what this source actually says” and “what I still need to ask”. Do not invite a child to ridicule another pupil’s family, stage a confrontational debate or decide another person’s final standing before اللّٰه (ALLAH). Practise gentle sentences such as, “May I ask what you mean by that?”, “The Qur’an teaches…”, and, “I do not know enough to answer that fairly.”

Worked example: a colleague says, “Christians and Muslims both love Jesus, so the beliefs are basically the same.” A fair restatement is that both traditions give Jesus major importance and that the colleague sees this as deep common ground. The Qur’an card then adds the decisive detail: Islam calls Jesus Messiah and messenger, affirms his miraculous birth and rejects divinity, sonship and “Three”. The response can appreciate shared honour while saying that the identity and worship of Jesus remain a fundamental difference.

A second example concerns scripture. Someone asks, “If Muslims say the Torah and Gospel were revealed, why not use my Bible to correct the Qur’an?” Begin by confirming Qur’an 3:3, 5:44 and 5:46: original revelations came from اللّٰه (ALLAH). Then read Qur’an 5:48, which gives the Qur’an the role of confirmation and muhaymin. Explain that Muslims therefore honour original revelation but use the Qur’an as the governing criterion. Do not pretend this brief answer resolves every manuscript question.

A third example concerns uncertainty. A video attributes a dramatic childhood story to a prophet but supplies no reliable source. Do not repeat it because it sounds supportive. Record the claim, search the Qur’an and authenticated hadith, and classify it. If revelation neither confirms nor denies the report, apply the restraint represented by Sahih al-Bukhari 4485. If the story carries a harmful accusation or humiliating detail, do not circulate it while “checking”; ask a qualified person privately.

The guide can be reused without storing another person’s personal data. Replace names with “speaker A”, remove contact details, and destroy drafts containing private information once the learning purpose ends. If a discussion reveals abuse, threats or safeguarding risk, stop the theological exercise and use the appropriate safeguarding or emergency route. A worksheet never replaces protection.

Before closing the sheet, run a final language check. Circle every “all”, “always”, “they” and “obviously”. Ask whether evidence supports the generalisation. Replace vague group language with the name of the precise claim or speaker. Check that each quotation has a locator and that every paraphrase is visibly a paraphrase. This small edit often separates a helpful invitation from a misleading polemic. Sign and date the completed source card so a later update can be traced.

Keep one clean copy for later verification and responsible correction.

Further practice: When the conversation ends well, gratitude does not require claiming agreement. Thank the person for explaining their view, restate any point you will verify and agree whether a follow-up is welcome. When it ends badly, do not post a one-sided account online. Record only the learning needed for your own correction, protect privacy and step away from abuse.
